CNN is set to air the first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the lead-up to the 2024 election. However, viewers may also be interrupted by commercials, which is a departure from the ad-free format that has been maintained by the non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates for many years.

The decision to include commercials in the debate was outlined in rules for access recently issued to members of the DC Television News Pool and CNN affiliates. Networks will also have the option to sell their own commercials rather than airing the ones provided by CNN. The specifics of the number and length of ad breaks have not yet been disclosed.

This unique plan could potentially allow other networks, such as Fox News Channel or MSNBC, to make more money off the debate by selling their own commercials. CNN has faced challenges in recent months with a lackluster program schedule, which has impacted its ratings in prime time slots.

Despite the commercial interruptions, CNN has announced that Dana Bash and Jake Tapper will moderate the debate between Biden and Trump. Advertisers have traditionally been interested in the presidential debates, finding creative ways to engage with viewers before or after the event. In past years, advertisers have run commercials that play off the debate atmosphere to capture audience attention.

The presidential debates have proven to be lucrative for TV networks, with CBS seeking between $200,000 and $225,000 for a 30-second ad during coverage following a Trump-Clinton debate in 2016. CNN also sought a commitment of around $300,000 in advertising before allowing sponsors the opportunity to purchase commercials during Democratic presidential debates in 2019.

Overall, the inclusion of commercials during the upcoming presidential debate on CNN is a departure from tradition but could present new opportunities for networks and advertisers to capitalize on the event.

Translation: Frequent breaks will allow Biden to be juiced up with whatever keeps him awake and makes him semi-coherent at times? An opportunity to break away if Joe starts to faulter or Trump hits a home run?

Long standing tradition being changed suggests ulterior motives, IMO.

LOL

Exactly!
They have to have commercials!

No way in hell Biden could make it through without them. And if he does start to go off script, commercial.

Who buys their lame excuses?

Yeah, it's so Biden can get "juiced". LOL!

NO. It's because of MONEY. It really is that simple. But leave it to ATS to make a whole "hub" and "bub" about commercials. LOL! You guys sometimes are just too much!

Thanks for the laugh.

The utter insanity of some people these days is unprecendented and utterly appalling. There are even a couple of these people right here on ATS. (Thread, too.)

Political campaigns/debates/ are a money pit for the networks and the media in general, both local and national.
Billions in revenue to be distributed between writers, networks, producers, print people, makeup artists, geeks twisting knobs and flippin switches, EPK people, catering, limo drivers, accountants, attorneys, truck drivers, Studio rentals, Security people, Camera and sound gear rentals, etc. It's all part of the entertainment industry biz!
For the past 10+ years I have worked as a media geek for our local Libertarians and GOP. Everytime you see a talking head; there are 100+ people at least working behind the scenes to put the show on TV. Blessed to get a small slice of the pie. Easy money...

I haven't heard that he did, but if you were Biden would you?
Anybody who's been paying attention knows this debate won't be allowed to happen unless they've found a sure-fire way to rig it in Biden's favor.

If Biden doesn't agree to drug testing Trump would be a fool to debate him.

Why would Trump bail out? If they let Biden talk, and don't cheat (with commercials strategically placed...) it's easy pickins' for Trump. No match of intellects.

Also, someone just reminded me of this old joke, and it's perfect for this topic:
"In a battle of wits, it's unfair to fight an unarmed man."

Sounds like a need for money and diaper changing opportunities. I hope Trump can sue all these brown shirts and take over their media

So, do they swap out Bidens at each break at let one go until they need servicing before the swap?

You know, recharge the batteries. Change the programming cards. Some animatronics are amazing these days.
