But a new study contains a startling revelation: People with tattoos may have a 21% higher risk of developing lymphoma. The study from Lund University in Sweden finds that people's chances of developing lymphoma increase regardless of the tattoo’s size.

The study found that the most common types of cancer associated with tattooed people were diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The American Cancer Society notes that non-Hodgkin lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., accounting for about 4% of all cancers.

The new study, published in the eClinicalMedicine journal, spanned a decade and involved 11,905 participants ages 20 to 60. Of this group, 2,938 individuals had lymphoma. The participants, which included those diagnosed with lymphoma as well as people in a control group, were required to complete a detailed questionnaire about tattoos.

While the study did not find any significant correlation between the size of tattoos and the risk of lymphoma, it did find the risk of lymphoma is highest among those who had their first tattoo less than two years prior.

It's more likely to do with how much time people spend out in the sun with their shirt off. Your new tatts increase the chance you want to show them off.

I think it's time to invest in some companies that make drugs for lymphoma. If the studies are correct, seems like easy money.

I don't have any, but I like to watch Ink Master.
My husband has one. My daughter has three.

I studied the subject of tattoos having an effect on thinking a while back. Some of the dyes they use can cause slight doping effects, some can increase certain aspects of immunity, and some can lead to long term forming Chronic illnesses.

Since I don't have any tattoos, I chose to research this with an open mind...no bias. The research on the effect of the tattoos to verify safety is kind of scarce, but there are at least twenty to thirty I found. The research I looked at seemed to be selected by previously known side effects of the dyes, so only certain colors were selected. Being that there is limited research and no direct link to direct cause and effect, it is hard to interpret things fully. One dye actually had chemistry that dampened anxiety, another could help with depression. So there is good and bad associated with tattoos.

one or two colors or type of die used in the tattoo could be the problem with the cancer. I personally wouldn't get a tattoo, I got enough problems with scars on my body. Although some people I know got tattoos to hide their scars or draw the attention from scars they had. I don't know why Tattoos got so popular these days. A little tattoo was common back in the seventies in private places mostly, but now people have gone wild with them. It is their body, they do have a right to tattoo it if they want to but that does not mean I have to believe they are nice.

I know quite a few people with tattoos these days, I don't think they are bad or anything, I just think they looked better without them.

It's possible there could be something to the study. Reading an article from a media site vs the published paper on the study can be very misleading.

You calling it with "introducing a foreign substance into the body" as there is a measure of risk involved when introducing any foreign agents into our bloodstream simply down to the fact that no two people are the same.
