Only saw this here on youtube, not sure if it's anything more than just a nothing burger. At this point I'm pretty jaded

Oh my, if this is true please alter your OP title to "Cambridge Professor AND HIS TEAM" interpreted the info from some one else's "telescope" as it aint just him because in the interview he keeps saying "we" so it aint just him.

The data is pretty noisy around the CH4 lines so it's hard to tell if he's really seeing DMS (CH₃)₂S or what. Reading the spectra at that distance is pretty tedious.

I would place this in the Maybe So, but likely Not bucket.
Time will tell.

You are very correct.
The good professor has a team working with him on exoplanets and related research areas.

We (humankind) need to begin getting a space program set up to visit a planet when enough evidence is uncovered to make that visit warranted. In other words, to have our bags packed and ready to go on a moment's notice!

futurism.com...

It's about the planet K2-18b, an exoplanet

NASA made a huge splash in September when it announced that its James Webb Space Telescope had spotted potential sign of life on an exoplanet dubbed K2-18b in the form of "dimethyl sulfide," (DMS) a gas that's produced exclusively by lifeforms on Earth.

The planet is 124 light years away from us so we can't do much. But the gas DMS, if this is what they have detected, it's almost certainly coming from phytoplankton.

It's too far away.
Around 124 light years from us, so it's impossible to visit. We can still visit the planet is our solar system or at least send some sophisticated probs and robots to dig and scan for life especially in Europa and Enceladus.

So, possibly a nothing burger? Did they find a McDonalds wrapper on another planet? Maybe a whopper wrapper, those wrappers seem to be all over the place.

I think we have a great deal of future evolution to digest before we go out and infect a virgin planet with our version of
"humankind".

I would not wish the nonsense that is going in in this world presently, on any new planet.

Talk about an epidemy of poorly timed self-righteousness.

That's a giant water planet.

Waterworld 65,400 miles around the equator.

If it is an ocean of phytoplankton on a planet with an average temperature of -10° F to 80° F (-23° to 26° C) they should be able replicate the findings again and again to the same DMS concentrations.

This is like the Holy Grail of exoplanet life.

Always thought life would be most common around main sequence Dwarf stars. I bet most are Red Dwarf hosted. We may have a larger star than most habitable planets.

I'm not too jaded to hope for the 50% possibility. He must be confident. Hope it checks out.

I totally agree, if we (as we in humankind) were to spend the money that is currently being spent on "defence" projects on any form of space exploration (that's physical exploration not just looking) we would be on the solar system planets by now.
