LONDON -- Nobel prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, who proposed the existence of the Higgs boson particle, has died at age 94, the University of Edinburgh said Tuesday.

The university, where Higgs was emeritus professor, said he died Monday “peacefully at home following a short illness.”

Peter Higgs was very known for his contributions in particle physics and his research on the mass of subatomic particles. In the 1960s he proposed that broken symmetry in the electroweak theory could explain the origin of the masses of fundamental particles and in particular the W and Z bosons.

He proposed a way for particles to gain mass known as the Higgs Mechanism and a corresponding particle known as the Higgs Boson, discovered and verified many years after it was proposed, at the Large Hardon Collider at CERN in 2012. Higgs was awarded the Novel Prize for his lengthy contributions in 2013.

He lived a long and productive life and earned immortality through the Boson he theorised , now the secrets of the Universe he worked to uncover are his.

Job well done Professor Higgs.

Higgs related fun fact

"The Goddamn Particle" was suppose to be the title of Lederman's book that came out in the 1990s and was wildly popular for a book about physics. However, his publishers weren't exactly on board with that phrasing, so the title was changed to "The God Particle."

The 'God Particle' is an unfortunate description but it does attract people who otherwise wouldn't have an interest in physics under normal circumstances.

Such an important discovery, and a life well lived.
God Speed Professor Higgs.
