Yeah I'm confused as well home owners insurance doesn't cover death. That is what an ADD policy does. It pays for accidental death or dismemberment. Assuming he could afford to pay the premiums for a police officer. Odds are pretty good he didn't have much as typical job offers 50k. However when checking benefits for NYPD they don't have coverage listed as a benefit. Have awesome retirement plan however.

Unless you take out insurance to cover your mortgage upon death you don't have it. Many do not carry ANY insurance as they cannot afford it.
