I posted this in another thread, realised I was drifting off topic, or it might take the discussion off topic. So I decided to make a new thread, as I am genuinely interested in people’s thoughts on the matter.

It has occurred to me that the problems we face in society, and the world at large, boil down to our own attitudes and conditioning. For some background I highly recommend watching the documentary “The Century of the Self” it should be freely available on YouTube if you haven’t already seen it.

The problem with society and our interactions with it is mental illness. Being well adjusted to sick society doesn’t make you sane. Only sociopaths and psychopaths thrive in a dog eat dog world, the greater the population density of any given area, the greater the sense of isolation and apathy people feel.
People aren’t cut out to live as they do, we haven’t evolved enough to adapt to the rapid changes in society that only benefit a relative few. In times of growth and prosperity people are generally optimistic and feel secure. In times of stagnation and decline the opposite is true. In such times the mental illness comes to the surface, the me first attitude takes over, people only care about their next dopamine hit, a temporary boost of feel good factor in their otherwise miserable lives.

Wether it manifests in drugs, obesity, acquiring some status symbol such as a flash car, etc… it’s all an attempt to make up for what we fundamentally lack.

Who is truly content, who is satisfied as they are? Hardly anyone, nearly everyone is mentally ill. It’s one big mental asylum out their but we are to afraid of ourselves to admit it.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion but that’s understandable as you’re all mental. Wether you can admit or not, doesn’t change the fact that in some way or other, you’re on the spectrum.

The only way out of the impasse that you outlined is faith in God and complete surrender of yourself to his providence.
Tested on myself.

In times of true crisis when the system to keep the illnes in check is cut off people are actually helpful and not egoistic at all... Plenty of examples, the landslide that cut off Christchurch is such an example.

If the crisis is manufactured it's crafted in such a way that the illness can boil up and steered in the right direction.

The moment people realize the system isn't there to keep up the status quo, they get involved to make live better for everyone. Because deep down we all know that it will benefit us if we are part of a caring society...

Toy Dolls
'We're Mad'
(recorded in 1984)

This is a story of madness and insanity!

Insanity is everywhere. It's a pity, everywhere we go...
We're mad John.
Sirens are wailing everywhere. The wars underway.

Down comes a bomb from the sky to the ground.
The score's two one, it's the enemy's round
But we'll all be dead, cuz the whole world's gone hellbound!

It's always the same! We're all insane!
We're Mad... ca ca ca crazee! We're Mad... la la la loony too!
We're Mad... ca ca ca crazee! Ca ca ca crazee now... Lookout!

Ten thousand soldiers everywhere. Guns on their shoulders, everywhere they go...
They're mad John!
Always a battle everywhere. Madness again, hey!

The wives back home looking after baby. Cry when they see that on the T.V
Their love's been shot, but tonight they made history!

In other words, convert or die... Sounds devilish,,,

considering we tried RT's idea for 2000 and it brought us right here I feel like it's not something to guide the way for a better future... Just more of what we already have...

You know, I've thought about this a lot, given that I was around in the 80's when they closed most of the mental hospitals.

I believe most people today, could be diagnosed with some type of "mental" disorder.

The thing is, they used to be "quirks", and for most people, you lived with them, and still managed to function in society.
Only the really bad ones, or when someone had a "break" did you get checked in for an eval and possible stay.
Families were much closer, lived together and took care of each other. Multi generational living was the norm.

Now days, mental illness is celebrated. People fawn over you, you get to live off the government, and get away with being an a##.
We cannot continue this way. It is unsustainable, both financially and socially. We are in trouble.

I think stoicism is a good philosophy to live by, faith in a higher power alone is taking responsibility away from oneself. from what I understand of the great thinkers and spiritual teachers of the ages, we have to lift ourselves up out of our predicament, it is a journey we must travel alone. We can read and repeat what others have said, but true understanding is only gained from the lived experience.

The kingdom of heaven is within us, not without.

I hear what you are saying, but let’s not forget mental illness was up until recently a stigma, it was something to be ashamed of and people bottled it up rather than talk about it. Going further back you were given electric shock treatment and the like. These days drugs such as Prozac are prescribed, or people self medicate with their own drug of choice.

Like I tried to point out society is mad, it’s like the blind leading the blind, a paradigm shift of what really matters is what’s needed.

I believe the lack of mental support, or perhaps too much medication combined with information overload that humans were not prepared to receive so fast is possibly the cause.

I haven’t claimed not to suffer from the same maladies I see others suffer from.

Also I have read enough of your posts to not value your opinion.

Believing only in yourself? Worthy.
But bad luck, you don’t even know what will happen to you in 10 minutes. Suddenly a brick falls on your head, or a car crashes into yours. And all the same - I control the world))))))

No, not believing only in yourself. But knowing only you can solve your own problems and find your own contentment.

That's what I'm talking about. You just need to trust God, and not think about the actual role in what is happening with the analysis of self-greatness.))))

Is love an illusion?

Love is all there is. Distortions of that, i.e. fear, hatred, jealousy, sadness are all illusions that serve the purpose of bringing the soul to fully realize love.
