At what point is it too late for the Dems to change candidates?

Ballot access laws are determined by the states. Whatever deadlines are in place are determined individually. It would be a mess to change candidates after the state primaries. We'd be in uncharted waters.

Looks like June 4th, if that's the limit. But the convention isn't until mid August.

This is looking like a strange set of circumstances.

It is a strange set of circumstances because the situation is not as stable as it might be in a normal election year.

I remember reading a few months ago where a poll showed that a generic, younger Democrat (someone other than Biden) would beat Trump in the general election. Likewise, a generic younger Republican (someone other than Trump) would beat Biden. In a match between Biden and Trump, it would be close, with Trump maybe winning. The takeaway message is that the electorate wants somebody new. Because neither Biden nor Trump could truly be considered "new" Trump might have the advantage because he's been out of office for 4 years and might be considered "newer" than Biden. On the other hand, he's never been out of the public spotlight. Also, there's a fraction of the Republican electorate that says they won't vote for Trump if he's convicted of a felony--which is likely to be the case, IMHO.

From a strictly strategic perspective, however, this brings up an interesting possibility. If Trump locks up the Repub nomination early, it would be to the Dem's advantage to nominate a generic Democrat like Newsom. Conversely, if Biden locks up the nomination early, it would be to the Repub's advantage to nominate someone like Haley. Either side would benefit from a bait-and-switch strategy, but only if the other side doesn't choose that strategy. That would suggest that the decisions as to who the actual candidates are should be made at the last minute by the Democrat Party and the Republican Party, in smoke filled rooms, regardless of what the nominating process comes up with.

I can see that it could end up being something like Newsom vs Haley by the time November comes around.

If they bump Joe out, where is he going to go? He's already getting the best care and attention we have to offer!

Totally different situation, but I remember the mess it caused when Dems replaced Tom Eagleton as McGovern's VP after the convention in '72. Pulling the head of the ticket off the ticket, or even replacing due to death or health, would be a psycho ward fire drill.

I'm pretty sure they can do whatever they want at their convention.

So whenever that is, I expect they'll make their play.

83 million devoted Joe Biden fans will be told their primary vote didn't matter?

Come on man!

If Trump or Biden are kicked off the Ballot, can they still be voted in by written in votes?

I would love to see Trump kicked off a states ballot and still win by write in. Not so much for Biden, but still would appreciate the meltdown and heads exploding.

Na, they need the space for illegal immigration. Like the space in NY schools. Or kicking vets out of nursing homes.

if Trump is kicked off a ballot, it's democracy in action, it Biden is, it's the end of democracy. I hope that make sense.

I guess what I really was asking can you really kick anyone off the ballet if people can still vote for them by write in?

The way it works.
Biden drops out and their super delegates get to CHOOSE who they want to run. The whole damn system is so disgusting

So the Democrats will only really need to get 771 votes to pick their candidate.

Here is what I found, what I thought. It is up to the states. There is a point at which ballots are finalized in many states and names can no longer be added or removed.

The final point at which state's ballots are finalized and no changes can be made to take someone off or put someone on varies by state. Each state has its own deadline for making such changes, and the specific procedures for replacing a candidate differ from state to state. For example, in Massachusetts, the Democratic Party chair could add additional candidates until early January, and there are other ways to get on the ballot, such as collecting signatures from registered and eligible voters or petitioning the secretary of the state1
. As of January 5, the filing deadline for presidential candidates had passed in 31 states or territories2
. Therefore, the deadlines for finalizing state ballots and making changes to the candidate list are determined by individual state laws and party rules, and they can vary significantly.

Whomever runs for the democrats will not debate Trump.

They will state that he's an insurrectionist, an enemy to democracy, and will refuse to give him time.

Bet on it.

Yeah. Hooker pee streams pretty much 24/7 on CNN and MSDNC.
