A Japan Airlines Airbus A350-900 has collided with a Japanese Coast Guard DeHavilland Dash 8-300 on the runway whilst landing at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).

The A350 was operating flight JL516 from Sapporo to Tokyo when it appears to have collided with the Dash 8 at high speed after touching down on runway 34R at Haneda. Video footage has been circulated on social media which shows the impact and the A350 continuing to slow along the runway whilst on fire.

Apparently, everyone was evacuated, no injuries, but the plane is toast.

BBC news reporting 5 people onboard the coast guard plane involved in the incident have been killed with the Captain reportedly seriously injured.

Sad couple of days for Japan.

The warning to go around was at the last minute. The Coast Guard aircraft was apparently a De Havilland DHC-8.

The Japan Airlines plane was JA13XJ, MSN 538, delivered 10 November 2021.

The DHC-8 was JA722A. It didn't have an ADS-B transponder. It appears that they were told to taxi to C-5 and hold, but may have misheard and went to C-1.

Seventeen people on the A350 were injured, with four being taken to the hospital.

It’s sad that there has been a loss of life. Although considering the cabin crew on the A350 fully evacuate d the aircraft in 90 seconds was amazing, considering the public address system was disabled.

According to the transcript JA722A checked in on Charlie taxiway, and was told they were number 1, and to taxi to Charlie 5. They were never give the instruction to hold at Charlie 5, which may have led to the confusion. The Aircraft Commander for the CG Dash 8 apparently told investigators that he remembered being told to taxi on to the runway.

The stop bar lights, that would have told the CG pilots not to cross onto the runway were out of service for taxiway Charlie. That's another factor that will be looked at.

What's left of JA722A.

Both data recorders from the Dash 8, and the FDR from the A350 have been recovered. Honeywell and the NTSB have been asked to assist with decoding them.
