If you're into Christmas movies, and believe it or not, I enjoy them and I'm always on the lookout for new releases and old ones I haven't seen.
This year, I have a few suggestions that for some reason are a little more obscure, at least to the people I've mentioned them to, so I'm bringing
them to ATS for those who haven't seen them.
First up is A Christmas Carol 2019 with Guy Pearce as scrooge. This is a Loooong movie. Nearly 3 hours. There isn't much in this movie a kid
couldn't see, but it was made for adults and deals with some adult subject matter. It's not a comedy, it's a drama, but per the story, Scrooge
comes around by the end. The acting is top notch, and it's a higher budget movie.
The second movie is Ebbie from 1995, and is for the whole family. Susan Lucci plays Scrooge and does a surprisingly good job of it. It's a made for
TV comedy/drama and follows the classic "A Christmas Story" story line with some twists and turns.
I avoided childhood Christmas shows and movies for 30 years, but now I'm drawn to them because of personal issues that I'm dealing with now. I'll list
them below.
1. Ernest Saves Christmas
2. Home Alone
3. Prancer
4. Die Hard
5. Peanuts Christmas special
6. Rudolph specials
7. Frosty the Snowman
8. A Christmas Story
9. Scrooged
Burl Ives singing as a stop motion Snowman gets me teary-eyed.
I've reached that point in my personal timeline that I question seeing another Christmas. My parents being gone makes Christmas hard for me. My
childhood was almost EXACTLY like Ralphie's in A Christmas Story. Crazy Dad, funny younger brother, and odd gifts from obscure relatives. I close my
eyes and I can smell Christmas, hear Christmas, and see Christmas, but I haven't felt Christmas for many moons.
Merry Christmas and have a wonderful Happy New Year everyone...with all the cooking and grand kids running around it always feels and looks like
Christmas for us during the holidays...
It's not really Christmas themed, but still a pretty "feel good" movie - "NOBODY" with Bob Odenkirk.
Watching that and "Scrooged" with Bill Murray tonight and tomorrow.
TCM is my go-to for older films. I probably watch more TCM than anything. A couple of more obscure holiday period movies I saw this year were The
Cheaters (1945) and one not Christmas focused but takes place at Christmas, Cover Up (1949). Both very good.
Cover Up is a sort of film noir. Dennis O'Keefe as an insurance investigator who goes to a small town to check on the death of one of the company's
clients that's been ruled suicide. William Bendix is the sheriff who knows more than he wants to share. Lots of twists. I definitely give it
đź‘Ťđź‘Ť
The Cheaters has a more classic Christmas theme. Poignancy, comedy, redemption. Another đź‘Ťđź‘Ť
If you like 30s and 40s era movies, you'll like both.
