So apparently those born in the '90s are addicted to social media, and that same social media is making them feel bad about themselves and giving them mental health problems. It seems that everything on social media shows perfect people and wonderful lives ... everyone skinny and smart and active I guess. So not only is social media dumbing down young America (my opinion based on their collective actions lately), but it's making them sick as well.

I'm not on social media. I have a Facebook account but never use it. What other social media is there? Instagram? TikTok? I don't even know. I guess I'm not missing anything by not being on ... except I'm missing mental illness and that's alright with me.

People born in the 90s have worse mental health than any other generation, new study reveals

People born in the 1990s have poorer mental health than any previous generation, a study has shown. Researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia used surveys to track the mental health of nearly 30,000 adults over a decade.

They found that not only did the youngest generation fare the worst, but their emotional troubles showed little sign of improvement over the course of the study - unlike older generations.

Social media, which left participants feeling like they were not good enough, was primarily to blame, researchers said.

I think a big part too is the hyper diagnoses doctors seem to do these days. I know young adults that are normal as anyone else but they have a psychologist and are on drugs. They tell me their doctor says they are depressed and I’m like over what, you have a great life. Just too much of that going on.

If you ask me, people born in the 90's (millennials) have serious mental health problems and are addicted to social media, although the two may not be intertwined with each other, IMO.

They were the first winners of the participation trophies, the first to be coddled, and the first to claim disorders as badges of honor and brag about being nuts, not to mention try to push it onto others. And their kids................ Also, they were the first to have social media to post about it and throw out baited lines for sympathy from the unknown and faceless public.

Now they're not only predominately crazy and out of touch, but they're stuck in limbo of believing everything they see on social media because they weren't really able to (or knew how to) fake as much when they were growing up.

So....... Off their rocker by defaut, regardless of Social Media.

You should really give Netspace a go. I have a few floppies around that can get ya through the setup process.
I can mail them to ya but I expect a check by mail to cover the shipping first.

From Merriam-Webster online:

Social media: forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

ATS is social media.

There are many social media sites:

Now, add in all the horror climate change movies that have been made in the last 20 years and the constant ranting by those crying "we're ALLLLLL gonna dieeeee". What a downer.

It's a vicious circle. They're creating their own negative environment and can't seem to get out of their own way. The lifestyles they live are completely different than ALL the generations before them. Standards have been lowered where they should have been raised. They have had more time, more opportunities, more assistance, more access to knowledge than any other generation. Their lives revolve not only around social media but modern technology has created modern conveniences that other generations never even dreamed of. It's also removed the need for them to be capable, independent, challenged, and to do and think for themselves.

And then there's the drugs. They've always been around but the variety and destructiveness are too many and too easily accessed.

I am so thankful that I am older and have lived a very rich life. One that brings me many many fond memories. I can't even imagine what their hopes and dreams might be or what they think about when they're alone. Oh, but they're never alone. They always have thousands of friends and followers as well as following others. Maybe that's part of their problem, they make no time for reflection and deep thinking.

Of course, there are many millennials and younger people that are living a full and satisfying life. But there are too many that are not.

OH. Didn't know that. I thought stuff like Facebook and places where you were yourself and not an avatar kind of thing. Good to know.

Could be more accurate to say social media is, by and large, unhealthy in heavy doses for all age groups. Moderation is key. Don't need a college degree to figure that out.

At what point am I supposed to feel sorry for those that get easily manipulated? I keep hearing these topics and headlines describe how "I'm so messed up," but I can clearly separate myself from the pool. I don't have much to add except either I'm smarter and more aware than the average, or the average has fallen so far that I may change my name to Not Sure.

Geez...we had this same discussion in the 70s about TV...

Kids need to unplug and go outside.

They're too young to be so obsessed with fantasy and escapism.

Unplug the youth.

From your link:

Dr Peter Baldwin, a senior research fellow at the Black Dog Institute, said that technology is largely to blame. People born in the 80s had the internet, but those in the 90s had social media, which brought with it a 'flood' of social comparisons that are very damaging to mental health, Dr Baldwin said.

That's just him telling us this - it's not decided

Regarding the possible causes of the trends they observe, Morris mentions the impact of social networks, particularly among teenagers, but points out that this impact on mental health is less than 5% in all age groups. “Although the evidence on social networks is still maturing, we are also analyzing other factors to explain the observed differences,” he adds.

One of those factors may be the awareness of mental illness itself, particularly among younger people. This greater knowledge can lead to a better recognition of mental health problems and more frequent mentions in surveys. “It is still unclear whether increased knowledge results in an overinterpretation of daily stress as an illness and implications for its treatment,” Morris concludes.

From the Guardian:
" Something’s gone very, very seriously wrong with our society and the way we’re heading and the way we look after our next generations,” he said. “It’s not just the standard risk factors for mental illness that are at work here. It’s something new.

So - climate change?

I of course realize that climate change isn't real (
), but fear of climate change is definitely real. Fear that your planet is melting and unsafe seems like it might be as important as feeling that you're un-Instagramable

Pictures of starving polar bears don't help - even if they aren't really connected to climate change. The message is everywhere

There's other stuff too. 24/7 news cycle - most of it not good, non stop I hate yous every place you visit. It's not fun times for young folk. It takes time to work out how to balance it all, and frankly the grownups aren't doing that great either

My goal is to be a luddite in my declining years.

If I want entertainment, I'll go to a library and check out a book.

Instead of downloading it on Kindle ?!

I'm bad for books or anything made of paper, so...

It's a necessary evil.
