Back in 2012 we were all excited as Nasa's latest robot set its tracks on the floor of Gale Crater destined to climb a mountain and sample rock cores , following the nail biting drama of its "Sky crane" descent just having Curiosity on the ground in one functioning piece was reason to celebrate , 11 years later Curiosity is quietly continuing its mission but by way of celebration NASA have released this 360-degree panorama from its position on Mount Sharp.
Full 360 image from NASA

The mission team is making sure the robotic scientist, now in its fourth extended mission, is staying strong, despite wear and tear from its 11-year journey.

The view down the mountain to the floor of the crater is perfect , 20 miles driven with hopefully many more to go , Happy Anniversary Curiosity and team.

How much would it cost to make a car that can recharge itself and stay in tip top shape for as long as the rover has?

According to the Planetary Society:

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity project cost $2.53 billion, of which $2.42 billion was for spacecraft development and launch, and $116 million was for 98 weeks of operations during its primary mission.

Well, considering it went 20 miles in 11 years, probably not very much. But you would not go very far each day.

That's about 0.0002 miles per hour if moving at a steady pace.

Such an amazing achievement.

Remember the (hoax) story about how the rover was sending secret transmissions embedded in it's relay that contained images of previous life on mars?

OT I know but man, what a fun one!
