Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister calls for sanctions against Israel

Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter has urged the Federal Government to introduce sanctions against Israel as punishment for its conduct in the ongoing war in Gaza.

"It's time for sanctions against Israel," De Sutter wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday morning. "The rain of bombs is inhumane. While war crimes are being committed in Gaza, Israel is ignoring international demands for a ceasefire. I am calling on the Federal Government to sanction Israel."

In an accompanying press release, De Sutter also called on the EU to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel and endorsed an import ban for goods produced in "illegal settlements" in the Occupied Territories.

De Sutter's comments come as many parties in Belgium's "Vivaldi" coalition government are reportedly warming to the idea of a boycott of Israeli goods produced in the Occupied Territories.

Another European politician among the growing number of politicians in Europe and elsewhere who have called for sanctions against Israel.

I strongly agree with Belgium's Deputy PM that the bombing campaign of Gaza is inhumane and has resulted in the death of many thousands of innocent civilians, mostly women and children.

The Deputy PM has argued that war crimes have been committed in Gaza and this is a very important point coming from an official in Belgium. I don't think there is much doubt Israel has committed a range of war crimes and it's not uncommon even to find Israeli politicians and officials who openly argue for the destruction and annihilation of Gaza.

It looks like there is a range of political parties in the coalition government thinking of boycotting some of Israel's goods. It's another form of pressure but the main focus should be to investigate Israel for war crimes committed in Gaza.

The MSM don't seem to be friendly to the Palestinian cause. If they were balanced in the way they present matters then there would have been a much wider condemnation of Israel, especially in relation to the bombing campaign and the killing of thousands of innocent civilians.

It's about time Europe starts the sanctions against Israel. The true picture of the devastation isn't yet clear in Gaza. When it becomes more clear in the future there would be more calls to make Israel as well as Hamas accountable for what they ve done. The killings of thousands of innocent civilians is a matter for the ICC.

That's not true. You don't have to be a Muslim to be against the war in the middle east. When I was a little kid I remember that in Europe people were in their vast majorities against the war in Iraq. Most of these people were not Muslims.

Being against the war doesn't imply you are in favour or support of the Palestinians and against Israel.

Belgium wants sanctions against Israel for Gaza bombings - deputy PM

How desperate your arguments have become.
It doesn't change the fact that a growing number of politicians and ordinary citizens not only in Europe but around the globe are in support of a ceasefire and for sanctions against Israel.
