A fascinating residual haunting case involves a 150-year-old house that has been in the same family for five generations. The current residents, a
family of six, were gathered in the living room, relaxing after dinner. No one heard any strange sounds or saw anything out of the ordinary, but
suddenly, the room was filled with the aroma of pipe tobacco. Everyone there detected the scent, which the grandmother recognized immediately. It was
'Old 79', a pipe tobacco with hints of vanilla and spices. Someone remarked that it smelled like root beer. The great grandfather who once lived
there smoked it decades ago. The man's descendents who live in the house now have had a no-smoking policy in the house for over 30 years. The
grandmother said that Old 79 probably hadn't been smoked in the house since the 1940s, yet eleven people corroborated this strange 'phantom smell'
story.
Another very weird case of a 'residual' was reported by a team of AAA hotel inspectors. Over the years, guests and staff at the famous Stanley Hotel
in Colorado have heard piano music and party sounds coming from an empty ballroom. In 1991, a pair of inspectors claimed to not only hear the
otherwordly party celebration, they also heard the sounds of children running up and down a long, empty hallway.
The ship the R.M.S. Queen Mary, is reported to be a hotbed of residual hauntings. Books have been written and video documentaries have been made about
the haunted ship. All manner of phantom sounds are heard. Whispers, laughter, knocks, pings and metal clanging. Trails of wet human footprints are
reported to appear, sometimes right before the eyes of onlookers.
The Gettysburg battlefield. Apparitions of Civil War soldiers are seen frequently. The battle lasted three days, with tens of thousands of casualties.
Exact numbers are unknown, but estimates say around 7000 were killed, 33,000 wounded, and 11,000 missing. A boulder field known as Devil’s Den has a
reputation for being a residual haunting hotspot on the battlefield. The area surrounding Devil’s Den became known as the Valley of Death because
the fighting was so intense. Reports of residual hauntings have been reported there for over 160 years.
The Montrose Airfield story is right out of 'The Twilight Zone'. Visitors have claimed that the haunts are generally residual, but also fall into
the "active" category at times. Montrose Air Base in Angus, Scotland is said to be a 'spectral epicenter'. Apparitions of pilots, and even ghost
planes are seen. Desmond Arthur was an Irish aviator in the Royal Flying Corps who died in Scotland's first fatal aircraft accident in May of 1913.
His ghost has been seen many, many times. Visitors have sworn that an old broken radio will suddenly begin playing old big-band music or Churchill
wartime speeches. The disconnected phone in the Commander's Room is sometimes heard ringing late at night.
Finally, we have a residual story from a 2005 Art Bell Coast-To-Coast program. Art's comments at the end are as interesting as the story itself. Art
says that he found it troubling to think of trapped souls lingering on, Earthbound. He seemed to take comfort in the idea that the residual hauntings
were not active ghosts, and that the laughing children were not trapped in some sort of otherwordly prison. The policemen were just hearing echos from
the past.
Probably why Entropy always increases. The 'output' of consciousness making forming new connections with the material surroundings. Stuff always adds
and on the record nothing ever gets lost.
Information density increases, complexity increases, entropy increases.
A great deal of effort throughout time has been expended to convince us these things are evil and satanic; we risk our souls if even giving thought to
them! Yet we've all experienced the 'paranormal' to one degree or another over our lifetimes, be it just an 'inner knowing' of whose calling when the
phone rings, or that sense that great danger is near-and it proves to have been accurate.
We have access to so much more power over our world than we realize.
Stuff always adds and on the record nothing ever gets lost.
Yes. On that note, I find the idea of a true "Akashic record" fascinating. A non-physical database where literally everything gets recorded.
Every event, every thought, every emotion and intention, both human and non-human.
Bookmarked and saved for later. These are some of the most intriguing topics. I think my "emotional signature" theory could explain some of these
residual hauntings
Awesome thread, and no doubt a future point of reference.
Though, I wonder if the Doris Bither case could be considered a residual haunting? It's a very strange case and one that has been largely forgotten
about, along with the story's film adaptation.
