I’m glad you mentioned the angst and hatred. I’m pretty sure the trauma was an unrequited love scenario. A best friend perhaps? Hence the deep-seated hate for homosexuals. The trauma of the rejection sent him into a downward spiral of self-loathing masked by projection because he doesn’t want anyone to know his true heart for fear of getting rejected and living the trauma all over again.
