...And a member called ApplePie started posting in what others thought was you or me. Same posting style and all.

That is plausible but then certain phrases or language style can be pretty obvious, especially say if English isn't your first language or use of a translator is used.

OK.

If there are reasonable grounds to suspect a ban is being flouted... Not "flaunted"....are there not easy ways of checking available to ATS?

I'm not very techie, I'm afraid.

But, if it walks like a duck, quacks like....etc?

It used to be easy but with a VPN now, it makes it a little more difficult I imagine, but there are other ways.

I do think if a person is different though then maybe a Mod could comunicate that without giving away details?
Sometimes I do find the lack of comunication after the intial contact with a mod a little disjointed

Apologies. You overestimate my techie skills, or lack thereof!

www.kaspersky.com...

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, so you can 'fake' where your IP address comes from. So as an example, Someone living in London using the internet, could make it look like they live in Birmingham.

How extraordinary.

What is an "IP address"?

Gawd...now I'm sounding like a High Court Judge!

It's sort of like your computers home address in basic terms.

So if a Mod thinks someone has re-joined and the ATS gods aren't happy, it was a simple check of the users computer address and e-mail. Now, you can use a VPN and make it seem like your computer is in another country if you want to.
People also use them with things like Netflix as other countries have different "play lists"

This is why it's difficult to do basic and quick checks of a banned member

I understand that the ban hammer has been busy as of late.

Folks, calm the heck down. If you lose an argument on ATS or even if you are winning and the other folks don't understand, then the problem is on THEM, not you.

And this is coming from me, DB, a member that has been goaded into fights when rationally, they are the ones actually "winning" because they get me so angry that I do things that get me banned, or in most cases, seriously warned.

Don't let people "goad" you into saying/posting things that will get you in trouble.

They are doing it on purpose most often and that's because what you're posting is right and on the money.

After a mod discussion:
Members are banned for various reasons, all to do with the T&C.

Often, those members do return under new accounts.
We don't always know they are returned.

Returning banned members must NOT refer to their old accounts, or why they were banned.
Active members cannot call out members or suggest they are former members.

The bottom line:
Active members must all follow the T&C here.

Also maybe have a way back for people who show genuine remorse after a set time..

That has always been the case.
But it is/was handled privately, between that person and the mods.

Like when I get phone calls from a Chicago area code, but the person is somewhere else. "Spoofing" is it also called?

With cells phones, I don't think it makes a difference.
If I live in Michigan and have a Michigan area code, say 616, I would have that same area code on my cell if I moved to Florida or California.
Unless I changed the number.

AFAIK anyway.

If you remove a post for thread drift or manners, can you please post the exact reason or at the minimum copy the original post?

The post is gone, so you can't even click it.

I received a few comments and I have no idea what I did wrong?

And the private message notification isn't working. I don't check my often, just because I don't usually use it.

I can see some members not knowing it exists and getting banned.

There is no way to do that at the present time.
I'm not even sure that is possible unless there is a total site overhaul.

You can always PM the mod who removed the post, and they can provide the text of your removed post.
And only the OP is entitled to know why threads are "removed" [trashed. binned. closed. etc.]

ETA
Private Messages DO work.
Mostly.
The envelop has not worked for MANY years....and again, it may have to wait for a total site overhaul.
I won't say the PM system is perfect, though. As most of us already know.

However, if you have several serious post removals and never check your PMs you could face a temporary posting ban to get you to communicate with staff.
I've never been sure why members don't check their PMs now and then....it's like checking your domicile mail box.

There are different degrees of banning. Eventually you learn what things are frowned upon the most, and avoid doing them.

That said, it's important to check your Private Messages frequently if you're a frequent poster to ATS. I'm getting better at doing so, but still end up getting surprised with a multi-day ban every 5 months or so.

As a matter of fact, time to go check my messages. If you get 5 "Warnings" in a 3 day period, your goose is cooked (can't post to ATS) for a week.

As I've said many times to people who get upset...We pay ZERO to belong here. ATS is a privilege, and one of the best ways to get your point/info/feelings/findings, etc.. in front of a lot of eyeballs. (Regular Social Media SUCKS in that regard, unless you're a big shot)

So learn what's important, check PM's frequently, and keep your emotions in check as much as possible.

BTW...For those of you who are insulted easily, or like to insult others, or make others see your point of view, I pray that you will mature out of it....You'll feel so much better and confident when you understand that God made all kinds of people.

A bit of a murky answer, but I get that it's down to the owners decission on who stays and who goes.

Active members cannot call out members or suggest they are former members.

I didn't see that in the T&Cs?
Only ever recieving a warning and not getting any kind of ban (fingers crossed) I had questions.
Even though DB's post is correct, sometimes it makes you wonder if someone is repeatedly coming back, do they have an ulterior motive, especially if it appears like they're only posting in certain types of threads.

Are we allowed to mention the person was previously banned but not give the actual username or is that against T&C?

It's obvious the same user has been banned a few times and come back with name changes a few days later.

It's difficult to pretend it's not the same person when they have identical views, identical catch phrases 'appolojetics' 'defender of the...', spelling mistakes and a very unique writing style as English obviously isn't their first language

Their identical argument style of putting words in peoples mouths and pretending to be a self appointed expert on every subject.

I don't want to see the person banned but it seems silly to have to pretend it's not the same poster as it's obvious to most ATS users.
