I'm baccckkkkkkk!!!!!

It took like over two years, but it seems the HD finally failed.
My husband was using the laptop one second and then he was not.

Diagnostics not happening.
The "WIN button"/R doesn't open Command Prompt.

Boot device not found.
Please install OS on the hard drive.
HD (3FO)
F2 system diagnostics

F10 and F11 either do nothing or take us back to that F2 screen:
The F2 diagnostics don't do much. We did not do the Memory Test.

Memory Test
HD test
Language
EXIT

The Blue Repair Screen on Windows isn't happening.

We already have a new HD to install, and that is likely to happen tomorrow.

hat we don't have is the OS to install.
Never did the backup, our bad.

I thought I had a boot stick for Win 10, but now I am not so sure.
I do have a stick that has this info on it:

Setup
bootmgr efi
boot mgr
autorun
support
sources
efi
boot

Is this the WIN OS??????

If it is not the OS stick, I have a link to the MS downloads for 10 and 11.
What I need is the easiest possible instructions for how to take that link, and use the ISO or mirror or whatever else is needed to install the new OS.

Will the HP recognize this install of the OS, will I need the Tag info, etc.

Looking for any help for the computer challenged.... please.

you can go to microsoft and download a new OS right from them.

support.microsoft.com...

Put it on a USB drive and mark what it is with a sharpie. Keep it handy and don't be afraid to reload the system when it acts goofy. Back up your documents to a separate drive and save your Microsoft Passwords. You will be an expert on this in a few hours.

Soooo....I don't need a ISO file to download to a USB???? ISO only needed for a DVD burn?
www.microsoft.com...

Select which media you want to use:
USB flash drive. Attach a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.
ISO file. Save an ISO file to your PC, which you can use to create a DVD. After the file is downloaded, you can go to location where the file is saved, or select Open DVD burner, and follow the instructions to burn the file to a DVD. For more info about using an ISO file, see Additional methods for using the ISO file to install Windows 10 section below.

I don't understand whether I need that or not.....

WHen you build the USB drive it will put the proper files in place to run this from the drive. Just follow the instructions on making the media drive, then once you replace the HDD, boot to the USB and run it from there. It should find the new drive and want to format and partition it. Just take the defaults on that. There are some youtube videos of people doing this, most are from people with funny accents (unlike a guy from Cleveland who has lived in the south for 35 years.)

That's the part I don't get...the USB has something on it already to guide us?

As for those YT vids....we already saw one with the accent. It was helpful and showed how to take everything out of an HP lappy.
Also have another with step by step pictures on removing the old HP HD.

I’m showing my age but I thought you found newer episodes of Bastard Sons of Dialup.

Bastard Sons of Dial-Up (also known as BSoD TV) is a tech show started in 2006. It is believed that the original concept was created by Ilya as an open show, allowing submissions from the community. The show has been spearheaded by Foxx and Mustang, though episodes feature segments from dozens of users. Episodes of BSoD can be considered thorough and highly technical. There is very little glossing over details, and little hand-holding. While the show is still labeled as in production, it has not had a new episode since September of 2009.

BSOD

Way off topic, but yeah Blue Screen of Death makes way more sense.

the microsoft site does a nice job of guiding you through this process. And if you like, you can make a windows 11 drive as well. (I like 10 better, but liked 7 best fo all) I use 32gb drives for this, but you don't need that much space.

the whole "death" aspect of this is over the top. Unless it's your laptop, then it's totally appropriate.

I know the term is used for crashes in windows, so why my mind went to BSOD hacker show first is beyond me.

Actually, it wasn't blue.
It was the absence of everything else.....like a bank nothing IIRC.
But I did not see the actual event.

LOL
I probably should make one for 11 while I am at it

And the MS site actually tells you how to take that blank USB and make the OS USB drive??
No ISO stuff?

no ISO stuff. that was for CD's and DVD's. If you do use them for anything, you need a separate program to run them. Virtual Clone Drive is what I use. But only when I have to make an ISO of MS Office or something. it's a little more complicated, so best to keep it simple when at all possible.

Throw the old hard drive into a USB case and then try to recover it using Easus or some similar program.

Except we know there were bad sectors on the old HD, so not sure that would be an option.

Some advice, if you can replace your BIOS battery while you are at it

Download the ISO and get Rufus and tell it to create the bootable image image on the USB drive.
No fuss , no muss.
Make sure the USB drive is selected.
Then double check the USB drive is selected.
Then triple check the USB drive is selected.
Within 5 minutes or so , bootable USB drive with OS setup .

Rufus

Hope you have your code key .

Thanks.
I seem to remember RUFUS when I had to reinstall Windows on my desktop.

This is more complicated, no?
Due to having the new HD? Needing to reinstall drivers and stuff like that?
Set the BIOS?

Yes, I have the Product Key.
Do I want standard or portable Rufus???
And looking at old files, I have a link the Acronis...do I need that?
