That only works if you trust that your representatives were elected fairly and if they haven't been corrupted themselves by the system yet. They are more interested in protecting each other than they are their constituents and this country.

such a situation is certainly visible in multiple countries, some look like a mini coup has already taken place by the poetical class conjoined with the media to overturn democracy to protect the political class from oversight (here I'm thinking of the uk but it sets an example for the others)
