A post by Grey Zone, a Wagner-connected social media channel, claimed Russian anti-aircraft defences had shot down the plane. It said that residents heard “two bursts of characteristic air defense fire” before the crash. “This is confirmed by inversion traces in the sky in one of the videos,” it added. Mash, a news outlet on social media app Telegram, said locals had heard two loud bangs before the crash.

If this is true, I think Vlad just stepped in it.

Then again, it was also obvious given the broader ongoings that this crash had a low probability of being an accident.

Now the question is… how do the Russian people respond?

Killing folk heros who had an odds-on chance of overrunning The Kremlin, and who passed peacefully through Russian cities taking selfies with supporters, may not go over all that well.

Putin is desperate. Acts of desperation rarely produce good outcomes.

The next few days and weeks could be very interesting indeed.
