On the ballot today in Ohio is Issue 1. The referendum, proposed by Republicans, would increase the threshold needed to amend the state constitution via the ballot box. The proposal was put forward after it became clear that a measure would be on the ballot in November seeking to enshrine access to abortions in the state constitution.

Despite the polls only closing an hour ago, the results have been so overwhelming that we already know Issue 1's fate. In a 70-30 split, the voters have rejected Issue 1.

So can a man have an abortion in that State?

It was entirely filled with misinformation. The the NO vote special interest used remarkable falsehoods promoting the notion that making it a supermajority of 60% to change the state constitution meant 40% of the vote would be deciding the outcomes. The tragedy is that it appears 70% of people in my home state cannot do basic math!

On the OSU campus the vote was 98% No. There's a reason the GOP are trying to make it harder for young voters to vote and that's it right there.

It has vastly more to do about outside special interest lobbies. I live there and am a registered independent. This vote had everything to do with making it less viable for a Soros, or a Koch… whomever… to not be able to lobby changes over the resident population

I love abortion. It kills future marxist. Speaking of, maybe this is the reason we need to dole out gift cards to illegal immigrants. For some reason, we have to kill babies because there are too many people and yet at the same time we have to allow mass illegal immigration because there aren't enough workers.

Pretty odd logic dont you think?

The Kochs and the Soros' don't lobby resident populations. They don't need the little people; they buy politicians and judges. This measure was meant to keep the power in the legislative halls and away from the people and the resident populations.

Oooops, it failed!

Maybe instead of forcing people to have children, we try and figure out why they don’t want to.

I’d be willing to bet the birth rate is at least lightly correlated with economic trends.

Why would young people want to have kids if they can’t afford it? Many are struggling to afford rent, a car, and keep up with other bills.

I’m not proposing we adopt any kind of spending programs, quite the opposite. I think we need more fiscal responsibility at a governmental level.

But there’s not much conversation about fixing these types of issues. Instead both parties have honed in on culture war issues. I rarely hear talk of meaningful policies from either side.

I think this is the best outcome for this one issue. Changing something like this, for the betterment of one action, is shortsighted, and could cause many more issues down the road. The system has been in place and apparently working for a time, make sure if you change it, it's been very well thought out and planned. This seemingly was not.

and yes, it does leave this topic open for change, but so do many other things in the future.

Power to the people.
Politicians always think they know better.

Instead of limiting the issue to abortion, why not expand the rights of all?

Have voters weigh in on a proposal along the lines of, "Government shall have no say when it comes to medical decisions between a doctor and a patient, and discrimination based on those grounds is illegal."

That would cover not only women and abortion, but everyone when it comes to things like government mandated drug use or businesses firing someone based on vaccination status. My body, my choice should apply to everyone, not just women who want abortions.

Issue 1 has been "strongly" defeated by Ohio voters.
