Ding Wei, the deputy manager of the project, said the undertaking will be crucial in gaining geological information from the depths of the Earth and building a first-class international and technical team in China.

“The 10,000-metre-deep exploration project is a ‘major national project’ comparable to the lunar exploration project,” Mr Ding said, according to China Electric Power News.

He acknowledged the engineers would have “world-class challenges” during the drilling of the borewell due to the underground conditions and remote terrain.

I wonder how far technology will allow us to go with this drilling
well hopefully they find some energy and no one gets hurt.
interesting, the West is going green but China is digging deeper for oil/gas.

They should dig 15,000 meters to break the record!

The Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest manmade hole on Earth and deepest artificial point on Earth. The 40,230ft-deep (12.2km) construction is so deep that locals swear you can hear the screams of souls tortured in hell. It took the Soviets almost 20 years to drill this far, but the drill bit was still only about one-third of the way through the crust to the Earth’s mantle when the project came grinding to a halt in the chaos of post-Soviet Russia.

As someone that has worked in the oil field for a few years, i can say with utmost confidence that the Chinese will not hit that mark by themselves with current tech. The physics of a metal drill shaft spinning at that depth is ridiculous. There is no way a 6 inch drill pipe is going to be able to hold up to that weight and torque. Each drill pipe is about 30Lbs and 30 feet long on average. So what is that, about 1200 lbs of drill string spinning at several hundred rpms or more? If i were them id start at the Marianas trench but that's our waters.

It's long overdue. Cthulu would do better than most of the sycophants running the world right now.

What’s interesting is where we buy our “green” energy from. Those LED cells, lithium ion batteries, solar panels are all made in China.

I would use a use a nuclear powered tunnel bore machine. But build it more sturdy and drop it from a crane, so it bores itself down vertical.

My father use't to tell me if i dig a deep hole.
it will come out in china.
The hole come out in my garden

Find a DEEP unuse'd mine!
it will give you a easy start.

You will need a one of the most
powerful refrigeration unit.
it is very hot down there.

From what I gathered, one of the biggest issues facing the Oil & Gas industry right now is the technology to handle the higher pressures at deeper depths doesn't exist yet. There are Oil & Gas wells all over the USA that are currently producing 1,000's of PSI straight from the ground in layers that are less than 5 miles deep. The deeper they go the higher the pressures, and the higher the pressures, the less our current technology can dial it back for production.

Some speculate there are pockets of G&O that estimate to be 20-25k PSI waiting to be discovered but nothing can withstand that pressure yet. We could hypothetically "release the Kraken" in a way that would devastate the Earth and if we can't cork it up, I assume a major catastrophe would occur. 1500+ PSI is high pressure. 25k? That's an entirely different animal.

But yay for Capitalism, right?

Yeah they are dreaming, We drilled a couple in Washata Co Oklahoma to 23,800 and that was a monumental task. One south of us was drilled in the 70's to 31K I think it was the deepest at that point in time.

Heat, weight, drilling fluid circulation, the list is long on why they wont succeed.

10K to 12k is not uncommon in western OK. We have some real monsters out here. The highest I have seen personally is 14,600 . One of the few time I was truly scared on location. The flow lines coming off the well head had expansion loops welded in them so when fluid came to the surface the pipe would flex and not snap.

It exposes another set of evidence that life, as we know it, may be much rarer than we think in the cosmos.

We currently burn the remains of our ancestors to sustain our world which is necessary for our survival.

In how many planets would the same geological processes that allow us to do this here on Earth, be similar, not to mention the types of creatures and vegetation that fermented in our rocky layers that allow us to tap into them to sustain our energy needs?

I wonder if we will find evidence of this process on Mars or Venus if they were ever inhabited by life in the past.
If not, we are probably much more unique than we think.

What if they let the air out and it all deflates?

They didn't stop the one in russia because of the soviet union collapse...they stopped because their drill bits kept melting. I don't even think with today's alloys we could get much further...the heat is insane at that depth. At just a mile or so deep at that mine in Mexico with the worlds largest crystals researchers can only be down there like 15-20min in specialized suits that keep them cool because without it you'd literally cook. It only gets exponentially hotter the further you go...guess hell is actually an apt description!

China needs to do something to find more oil at home. It's a huge country.

We're selling oil from our rainy day piggybank (reserves) to China. Senators are trying to stop these sales.

And all that heat rising and heating up our air. It will probably cause global warming.

Global Warming is GOOD for some places and BAD for others.

It's reduced the number of times I've had to snowplow our driveway over the past 4 years or so.

Global Warming has been good for the Chicago region, in that regard.
