See all the other countries in green besides China?
All the fishermen in all these countries have no problem the US Coast Guard wants to patrol these waters.
China wants the whole South China Sea for its exclusive use. That's fishing, oil, natural gas, minerals, and exploration all for China. Might as well turn all those countries Chinese if that happens

International law dictates how far away from the coast a country's border extends and where international waters begin. China is the only one being Imperialistic in this region. The American goal is to keep these waters free and open to China's neighbors for fishing and shipping reasons.
The job of the Coast Guard is to protect our coast. They should be patrolling for drug smugglers, illegal aliens, human trafficking, etc.
The job of protecting other country's waters is that of the country involved or the Unted Nations.
The Coast Guard has a robust international presence, including three permanent international units. Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA) is the Coast Guard’s largest unit outside of the United States
