For some reason, whenever i see a hippie, i get really angry. there are a lot of teenage hippies in my area, and i can't stand them. and the smell!!!the ones that i have been around smell awful because they only shower but one or twice a week, and then try to cover it up with that terrible patchuli, which only makes it worse!!!

Most of the kids that you see today and label as "hippies" are just posers, they have claimed a lifestyle which they want ot embrace, but do nothing about, other than smoke weed. I've known a few real hippies in my day (you know, from the '60s), and they were all about peace and love, and getting things done.

And they shower.

Can you tell me what the stereo-type is for a hippie? I might be one I need to know. Thanks

I know what you mean. They say they want peace, but dont do anything to achieve it. All they do is smoke weed and loiter.

In San Diego, there are quite a few hippies few and far between, You'll aways find them in Balboa Park on Sundays banging on drums and dancing (They never sing). They are also in Hillcrest and North Park.
Difference between a "Professional" Hippy and a young punk is, Professional hippies make a career out of it or have careers relating to social work, educators, social activism, Eco-business, enviromental related careers etc. Some of the professional hippies I know have small modest house with huge yards and litterly have a million dollars in assests.

The young punks I know or knew are don't care about working and don't want to work, pan handle or "Spange" ("Spare Change?") for a living. Get their food from Food Banks. They grow out of it eventually and go home.

but the Original Hippies I know, such as my parents and people in the community, they are all elderly grandparents now and the days of revolution far behind them.

If everyone smoked weed and loitered all the time there would be peace. You could say they are leading the way.

Yeah, i should have been more specific, i meant the young hippie posers. i've known quite a few original hippies, and they were great. the young ones are the ones i can't stand. it's pretty much like everyone said, basically, they're wanna-bes. they annoy the hell out of me. just like the rich white kids who act all thugged out and talk about life in the ghetto when they know nothing about that life, but i guess that'll be for another thread. thanks folks.

Yeah, what's with kids these days? (darn, I sound old there...)

I have the opportunity to get back to my alma mater fairly often, both for businsess and for playtime, and walking around campus, it seems that none of the students are "real" anymore, they look like they just picked thier crowd, and dress to fit into that scene? Is this something new, or did i act that way and not notice it?

I doubt their are a lot of original hippies since all does drugs and years of abuse probally wore the crap out of their bodies. In my U.S History class were discussing Hippies, the teacher forced us to listen to terrible music from Jimmy Hendrix and The Beatles, god for bid I have to go through that again.

He also explained the song "Purple Haze" to us, I never knew hendrix was talking about Opium lol.

he he, you're allowed your opinions on music, I'm sure I feel the same about what you must like...

I know quite few people who would fall into the "original hippie" catagory, many of them gave up drugs long ago. As a very good friend of mine has said, it's about the attitude, not the drugs..

precisely, it seems more of an excuse to use drugs and act like a retard than anything esle. and yes, you probably did act that way. and hey, guy, what's wrong with the Beatles? i like a lot of different music, 80's punk rock, some classic rock, and a whole lot of tom waits.

Slap yourself. Now. Hard. With a salmon. Hendrix and the Beatles were Gods compared to whatever you listen to, which by the way was more than likely produced by bands ripping off Hendrix riffs and Beatles tunes/lyrics.

You are a hippie,
You smell like skunk,
I'm your arch-enemy,
A middle class punk.
Get out,
Get a life,
Get a job,
Everyone's smoking grass,
Everyone is an ass.
Can't you afford to cut your hair?
Cause Frank and I will cut it off for free.
Never trust a hippie,
They'll sell you bad drugs.

As a rule, no one who is not over 45 years of age could have been a Hippy. By the 70's, when I was going through my teens, there were very few hippys left that we could find outside of the occasional Rainbow Family Gathering.

Too young to be Hippys,
Missed out on the Love.
I turned seventeen in the late seventies
In the Summer of Drugs.

I think that is from a song by Warrant or someone like that. It's very accurate.
