A Thai airways jet has had an on ground collision with an Eva jet.

There was a winglet ripped off the thai aircraft.

At least it was a ground handling incident.

Look like both aircraft will be out of service for a time.

St k look east all passengers disembarked with no injuries.

They can remove the winglet if they don’t have a spare handy. It will probably only be a day or two before it’s back in service.

Zaph I would imagine both winglets would need to be removed for flight otherwise there would be an aerodynamic imbalance .

You can fly with one just fine. There are multiple restrictions added, depending on type. Some are only allowed to ferry to a repair station on a non revenue flight, but if you remove one, you get an increase in fuel consumption. The 747-400 is about 2.5%.

Surprisingly, looking at the minimal equipment list, you can fly with one missing but not with both missing.
And yes, it increases fuel burn amongst other issues like decreased lift etc.
