NEW DELHI, April 10 (Reuters) - The Dalai Lama, the Tibetans' 87-year-old spiritual leader, apologised on Monday after footage showed him asking a young boy to "suck my tongue" at a public event.

No this isn’t a joke. This is real.
Remember if people in power are so brazen to do something like this in public just think what transpires in private.

Is an apology enough?
He says he like to tease in a playful way.

Sick world we live in.

Parents, don’t ever, ever ever ever ever ever beat yourself up for being too overprotective with your kids!

It is something I have never regretted & has saved me!

Early 80’s I was in private gymnastics. My mom would come and watch me practice.
The coach said parents shouldn’t be there, my mom told him to jump in lake and pulled me out immediately.
Thank you mom, probably saved me from being molested!!!

I saw this yesterday and was gob stopped.

Sick.

There are quite a few pics floating around of rabbis with their face in babies crotches during some religious ceremonies (Circumcision possibly?) and paintings and statues of RC Priests getting what look like BJs from little boys.

This world is getting sicker but it’s been fairly sick for a long long time.

🤮

I thought it was common knowledge that he uses young boys. I’ve been wondering where the outrage is for 20 years.

Westerners don't seem to realize that manners and customs in the East may not correspond with their own. It should also be noted that the Tibetans have long displayed startling ignorance about the West. It's not that the Dalai Lama lacks tact, as he has repeatedly offended the West unknowingly and has apologized for it. I must point out that spiritual leaders in the Orient being recognized as public figures does not detract from their character, as turbulent conditions in the West discourage such individuals from coming out into public.

It's interesting how the people who were present didn't bat an eye, as if they regarded it as a normal display of affection or playfulness. However, it can't be argued that this incident entirely conforms to the Tibetan greeting of sticking out the tongue as a mark of respect. That only occurred after the kiss. But a kiss on the cheek or forehead is customary for some nations, why should a kiss on the lips be any different?

(I refer readers to Julian's Against the Galileans, in which he describes a custom of marrying relatives or even one's mother, unknown among Greeks but accredited as virtuous among Persians.)

Regarding his controversial statement about his desired successor being an attractive woman, admiration for a face doesn't have to stop at sexual love. The ancient Greeks admired faces for their features and cheerful expressions.

Just as with Epstein, rumors go back decades.

Where there's smoke there's usually fire-especially if the smoke keeps getting thicker.

Gonna hazard a guess that it doesn't matter what rock you're from under on this planet asking a child to suck your tongue isn't appropriate

So let's not get into the whole "customs" diatribe to excuse this

Unlike U.S. President Biden...

The Dalai Lama has apologized for kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to "suck my tongue" after a video of the incident sparked outrage on social media.

Says which law? Tibetans have their own laws, they should handle their own affairs. The West doesn't get to dictate how foreigners should live their lives, at least not until it has dealt with Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. You can say it's not appropriate "on this planet" when these countries are pacified.

How would western colonizers react when they make contact with the Sentinelese peoples and find out that they have similarly appalling customs?

We're not talking about sentineleese so that's a nonsequiter

I know exactly what you're trying to do and the argument you're attempting

Not going to work w me

If you find this appropriate or your sympathetic in any way I'm just going to assume you're fine w this sort of stuff w children and I don't even want to waste another word on you

He has probably got frontal lobe blood clots which are interfering with his judgment. Common tongue sucking is this normal?

Very gross and absolutely unacceptable behavior from any adult to any child.
Sickening that some are attempting to defend this behavior.

It seems this forum effectively shuts down any arguments which draw attention to past Western crimes.

I have no interest in defending the Dalai Lama, who I obviously don't know personally. Nor am I defending the custom.

I'm just seizing on this opportunity to highlight western moralism, sentimentality, and startling ignorance of foreign affairs.

To be frank, I dislike children in general, but that doesn't mean I'd ever subject them to such a treatment. If you had to deal with children running around above an apartment floor all day long, you'd grow to dislike them too. George Steiner made a similar complaint, using an Jamaican family as his example. Why did Ted Kaczynski turn out to be a bad teacher?

I usually don't care but I have to ask, how old are you? You understand that most of us on ATS are adults, myself a female in my 40s, with several kids a piece either grown or still getting there.

Ive suffered much more than "kids upstairs" and it has no bearing on if I like kids or not or if this is acceptable behavior

It really doesn't matter whether you like them or not, wrong is wrong, you seem to making a TON of excuses for this behavior, I'm with MBTM on this one you seem AWFULLY fine with this behavior

The "its just their culture" excuse doesn't fly.

There are universal societal norms and there is room for culture, but not for cultures that comit physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Most people think of Tibet’s monk/monastery life style as some peaceful serenity retreat based is celibacy. Couldn’t be farther from the truth. Absolutely absurd amounts of sexual abuse happens to women and children. Most of the “raise your vibrations” “activate your kundalini” and or “reach a higher plane” actually means have sex with the lama, Bodhisattva, Rinpoche

Not me, I think in general a lot of religious/monk/monastery life is a cover for a lot of perversion. Not all but a lot.
We’ve seen it with the Catholic Church too.

No excuse for a grown man to ask a child to suck his tongue, none, nada. I don’t care what culture you are from this is child sexual abuse.
