Household mirrors have reflective coatings on the back of a sheet of glass; they are not front surface reflectors. The thickness of the glass is a standoff, of sorts, and determines the reflective properties of the mirror. The front surface of the glass is also a reflector and adds to the optical problem.

Get close to a mirror and look at yourself. Concentrate on the whites of your eyes.

Rotate your head.

The eyes stay level, perpendicular to the ground!
