I was reading about maglev trains on howstuffworks.com, and I was wondering if you think they have any military use. Also I think they might be used to transport materials to top secret bases going underground.

I don't thinks so, what military uses trains? I think maybe in secret tunnels but they are way more expensive that regular track trains.

I can see a defensive use for them, I have been coming up with some concept designs for them, the ways I se Mag-levs being military used is for troop and supply transport in the homeland, also, if you had attack satelites about to attack, you could have a whole car as a EM weapon array, toshoot down the satelite.

Mag-lev trains are meant to also be a lot faster than regular trains so they may be installed in underground bases. The only military uses would be in the home country. Troop transport, moving equipment etc. This would free up the helicopters/planes etc for out of country missions.

The military does use trains. Absolutely.

Mostly for transport to transport. At the bottom of the Salt Lake valley is a large transportation brigade. They have a dedicated rail line to SL International airport and to Hill AFB.

In Germany, we railheaded every time we had to move the Bradleys to anywhere off post.

Maglev applications? When they can handle VERY heavy equipment, sure. Not likely soon.

I just though of something ya know the idea of having big bases that could actually move around in the ocean? Well maybe we could use the maglev trains to transport materials and men around the base, it would work perfectly if the base was powered by a IPS (intergrated power system).

Mag-Lev Fun

It would be a fun project to build one for your self. Here are the
basic instructions.

Military uses, does an alternative to the space shuttle count?
Here is an interesting discussion of a sky ramp concept.

Flight test alternative, this seems to be much more than a concept. This
should count as an answer to the original question.

Mag -lev acceelators built on the moon are a most cost effective way to launch payloads to Mars..
IMHO the very developmnet of Mars wil depend on Moon based Mag-lev accelerators..

I dont know how a mag-lev could help bring us to the moon, unless you mean like a rail-gun launcher for non-living cargo, in which case would get rid of the surface to orbit rockets.

Even for transportation I don't see how trains would be much use in a war. Blow up any part of the track and the train can't get to its destination anymore.
Trains were used frequently as transportation in CnC Generals but that's a game.
