The asteroid was only discovered on the 21st of this month and today it will become the 4th closest pass by an asteroid since records began , it's said to be about the size of a truck so no danger of a cataclysm if its 2,174 mile close pass turns out to be a bit closer than expected.

Asteroid 2023 BU is approx. the size of a semi truck and will pass Earth in one of the closest such encounters ever recorded, coming Earth's GEO Stationary Satellites Sphere

NASA predicts the asteroid will pass 2,200 miles (3,600km) above the southern tip of South America at 7.27pm US eastern time on Thursday (12.27am GMT on Friday).

6 hours and counting.

Will an asteroid coming within that distance leave any sort of illuminated dust trail?

A bit short notice!

Get those cameras out South America, just in case.

Well the space station is at 250 miles, so they're ok...

It has been speculated that bits could drop off it due to gravity so I guess there's a chance of something visible from it.

No danger of cataclysm? If the numbers are off by a tiny percent and you are within around 100 miles of impact, you would say it is a cataclysm.

The predictions are likely to be somewhat off because of so few observations, it being just descovered. This is normal.

It is around the size of the one that impacted Russia as mostly an air burst a few years ago. en.m.wikipedia.org...

The world can't end because of this one, but it could put a serious dent in a large blast area if it hits.

At that size it wouldn't survive re-entry but yeah it would make a pretty big bang and shockwave like Chelyabinsk.

ISS is now over the Indian ocean. They can't see it from there.

Anyone else have a live feed that is not computer simulated?

Hope it passes far out, and doesn’t spread any new viruses.
