The sun just erupted a trillion tons of plasma into space. Billions of people can't fathom how lucky we are this isn't aimed at earth.

!!!MASSIVE!!! Non earth bound solar flare!!!

What a way to reiterate the solar maximum we are just beginning!

Many will wax philosophical about "not if but when" one actually hits us... but that is kind of presuming that the "one that does hit us" is this big. Still it is awesome considering the sun just blew a trillion ton booger out... and happened not to 'facing us' at the time.

What would have happened if it was a direct hit?

I'd recommend spending a few hours watching some of Ben's videos.

2 Peter 3-10

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.“

Some very nice auroras.

The Earth gets hit by solar flares on a frequent basis. www.livescience.com... They can cause outages of satellites but very rarely have any other impact.

Here's an interesting article about the strongest solar flares in history

Uh, like the Earthquake thread, a magnitude would be nice!

The classes are : A, B, C, M, X, then (number).

The Carrington Event was estimated at ~X45. The current from the sun CME surged through the telegraph wires around the country and set a few stations on fire because of the induced current!

So, besides a “click bait” headline, could we get a magnitude of what we dodged??

Weird seeing no mention of a massive flare on Spaceweather.com after a cursory look, but yes I'm thinking this is what will eventually end civilization as we know it

Thanks, I thought as it was a massive one there may have been more damage. 👍🏼

Mercury is really close to the Sun, yet it hasn't been obliterated yet by any Solar Eruption over the last 4 BILLION years of its existence.

Why?

Great question!

Perhaps Mercury is the Sun's moon.

Maybe it plays an important part in the cycles of the Sun.

Just some thoughts.

Because it's already a dead red hot world? What's a direct hit going to do to Mercury that isn't happening on a daily basis already? An extra 1000 degrees for a day or two isn't going to make a difference there.

A blast of molten sun-matter should surfboard Mercury away along with it, if it's really that big.

Yup. Or at least blasted the surface to rubble. It's not strong enough to push a planet away.

And (I think you noted this?) solar flares travel very quickly. So even if we were in the past, the lovely auroras would be mostly gone by now.
