What I want to know is, as a white American, what things are those other groups not supposed to say to me to avoid "othering" me?

*crickets*

That's what I thought. This is only a lecture to me about how awful I am for trying to be a part of the world and inclusive and interested in other peoples.

If you ever become moderator you will be given a list of words that are unacceptable and they mostly refer to muslims and people of color.
There are no words that will get you banned when a white person is attached.

This was 10 years ago....he said basically his job consisted of not allowing certain groups to be made fun of.

Im Hawaiian and when people say Aloha I don't care. I don't even care when people call something hawaiian because it has pineapple on it. I just laugh at their ignorance.

I’m betting they got the word already from that person at the WEF spouting off about hate speech and telling everyone at the forum that there will soon be hate speech laws in the US. Wow this is just bizarre. These people promoting this have some hubris. Article at Gateway Pundit about this. www.thegatewaypundit.com...
You know, our people at work regularly say “hola” to our Spanish speaking friends, and you should see the smiles on their faces, because it’s considered appreciating them. We have teams of people translating English to Spanish and Portuguese. These wef people making up these rules have another agenda.

I visited Hawaii with my father as a teen. Loved it. I always think of Hawaii when I see a pineapple. I think it's a great association.

One of the most fun things about the trip was a tour of the Dole pineapple factory.

Don't hate me because I enjoyed myself.

wait… the wef says that being multilingual supports economic growth www.weforum.org...
But we can’t greet people in foreign languages any more or it’s “hate speech” or “cultural appropriation”?

Umm, really? I missed that. I was never given a list.

I don't need one. Written aggression speaks for itself. There is a an idea in your postulate that moderators need 'direction' to combat mean-spirited, hurtful, or otherwise repugnant language use.

At least here on ATS moderators are trusted to discern and respond, in most cases we respond in a character and light of 'moderating' not 'indoctrinating.'

We are human beings, like you... I might react clumsily, or with other difficulty... but react I must, so please understand that we are not focused on members as "customers." Rather we care about the dialog, the content, and the open and free exchange of ideas... Mind you, we do not always agree, often we are drawn into lengthy and arduous debate, but our decisions are not based on ideologies... they are based on principles.

Frankly - to me (and maybe most Mods) - you have no race, no color, no 'status of identity' that can affect our self-imposed obligation to attempt, in earnest, to elevate the conversation and maintain the dignity of all members. Thats why this works...

List? ... I don't need any stinkin' list!

[PS - I must add that I CANNOT speak for all moderators, nor do my words count as a declaration from "ATS." We value our differences as much as we value our agreement. If you doubt the 'non-robotic' nature of our moderation I can only offer that your perception is regrettable, and I would hope that you might find a reason to reconsider.]

Respect.

And 'czesc' in Polish, which to confuse matters even more, means hello and goodbye!
