Chinese fighter jet gets real close with US recon aircraft

Just like it says. A PAL aircraft got close to a U.S. Air Force RC-135. Reports say within 20 feet. And that the pilot had to take "evasive maneuvers". This happened 8 days ago. And was only released today.

A Chinese military jet came within touching distance of a United States Air Force plane and forced it to take evasive action to avoid a collision in international airspace over the South China Sea last week, according to the US military.

A video released by the US Department of Defense showed the close encounter, which followed what the United States has called a recent trend of increasingly dangerous behaviour by Chinese military aircraft, according to Reuters.

The incident, which took place on December 21, involved a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet and a US Air Force RC-135, according to a US military statement on Thursday.

Yeah, not a big deal. They try to push us away, we try not to move. The “evasive maneuvers” was simply turning out, before going back to where they were supposed to be after the fighter moved away.

Waaaa! Grow some balls and ram the mother scratcher. They won’t do that again!

Flying a spy plane and then complaining that they send up one of their fighters to intercept is just typical of the US.

The complaints are coming from Public Affairs. They’ve never been closer to an RC than seeing pictures of them, let alone been on a mission. This is nothing more than fear mongering to stir people up.

It's called "thumping." The Chinese have been doing it for years. The idea is to pull up close behind a US aircraft, then dive beneath and come up fast right ahead of the US airplane. The "countermeasure" to this technique is to extend flaps and fly as slowly as possible. This puts the Chinese jet into a near-stall situation. Not along ago, when Bush II was POTUS, a "well respected" (according to China) pilot performed this technique, came up in front of the US plane, hit the nose of the US aircraft, and fell into the ocean and died. The US aircraft, badly damaged, then made an emergency landing at a Chinese air force base, thus giving the Chinese a wealth of intelligence information. The airplane was ultimately taken apart and shipped back to America and the crew released.

The US Navy typically flies these missions. The planes are full of NSA spy gear to listen in on whatever they can. My daughter was an Arabic linguist with the Navy. Her buddies would come back from these missions in Iraq with dozens of bullet holes in the planes. She never got a billet on one of these planes, which was fine with me. She was stationed in CONUS in a nice safe building with lots of antennas on top and no windows. They got transmissions relayed via satellite from (I believe) Cyprus. They listen to everything, including cell phones. My daughter absolutely delighted in telling me she could tell me, but then she'd have to kill me, a line I used on her when she was growing up.

Now let me think, get down off your high horse. Now what was a US Recon plane doing in the South China seas, that's South China not the Eastern pacific. Was it to protect and defend US soil? Eerr, no. Was it to protect US interests in the area? Probably. There are too many instances of US forces around the world that are poking their noses into places they should not be. Unbeknownst to you the world can and does carry on without US military presence about.

South China Sea doesn’t mean it all belongs to China, despite the name. The US has many allies in the area that they support, and has as much right to fly these missions as China does around Taiwan, Japan and Korea.

If they could reach that far, the exact same thing that happens when Russian planes fly into the Alaska or California ADIZ, which happens a few dozen times or more a year.

You've already been told why: To listen to message traffic. This is perfectly legal.

The US is not making any such claim. Are you? As to what would happen? Nothing special. Unlike the Chinese, the US does not engage in "thumping" with all the risks that entails. The Chinese have the right to be in international waters, and so does the US. Quid pro quo. It's normal. It's just that once in awhile the MSM "discovers" this behavior and attempts to make a big deal out of it. Relax. It isn't.

Every so often, usually in the Daily Express or The Sun, it's reported that Russian aircraft were caught around UK airspace and probing us!! Luckily, our jets were bump started and they intercepted and escorted them away.

Phew, panic over.

But there never seems to be any reports in the rags when we do the same to Russia or any other country. I guess we're such sporting chaps that we don't use recon aircraft.

The thing is, that this is in international airspace, and the Chinese are acting dangerously. Yes, I am sure the Chinese think it's macho and makes them feel cool and "top gun", but accidents can - and do - happen, as the avoidable collision of a Chinese jet with a US EP-3 in 2001 can attest.
