Good afternoon ATS,

Just a short question My buddy and I were doing some day drinking here, which we do once every 3 weeks or so, since we are both retired. We were in my gun safes ( what 2 good ol boys tend to do), the kind of thing where we were discussing the very important subject whether my DK is bigger than yours type of thing. So, that lead us to a question that could be important in a SHTF situation. Would the electronic locks on our safes work after an EMP?

Have a wonderful Christmas, and be safe during the coming bad weather.

no, you would have to use a key/manual unlock. like when the lock's batteries die

By the time the EMP’s come, your guns won’t be in your safe. They will be hanging on your walls, cleaned, loaded and ready to go.

In a strong enough EMP even your wrist watch will be magnetized.

I wouldn't expect it to-
but since *most* gun safes can be opened with a skilsaw in less than a minute I can't imagine that lock would keep you out for too long.

One of the good things about being retired is I shoved my watch in the drawer. No place to be, and all day to get there. I hope you get to experience that freedom.

Have a wonderful Evening,

WBR

EMP is an Electro Magnetic Pulse. When a monster magnetic pulse sweeps over a wire, even a tiny length of wire like in a microcircuit, electrons are induced to flow in large quantities far exceeding the capacity of the wire. Yes, I know, electrons don't really flow. It is an electromagnetic wave that moves down the wire, but electrons flowing makes for an easy grasp of the effect. Electronics inside of a well grounded box with NO connections to the outside, like plugged into the wall, should be OK. Safe makers could easily engineer an enclosed box with a hinged metal cover over the display to protect the battery powered electronics from EMP. Would make for a good sales feature.

That's a good question. Given that my gun safe is inside a well grounded all steel building/construction, would mine still work.

I would think that kind of building would be just as effective as a Faraday cage.

The real question is are willing to risk it not opening should an EMP occure even if it is a 1 in 1000 chance?

If the lock doesn't open, your power tools won't work ether.

So for me, everything is secure and locked mechanically.

Modern Securam locks are EMP safe. And zombie proof too.

Yes they will, sorts. You just need to know the drill point and associated trick(s) for your model, have choice drill bits, and big power drill (and a nice ratchet strap).

If the EMP killed the lock, it also killed the drill, saw, grinder, power grid, etc...

But after an EMP, how would he use a skilsaw? Or Grinder?
Keep in mind, electricity will be gone, uneless you have a generator that wasnt affecred.
