40+ Park View Middle students sent home after sudden illness during choir rehearsal

Park View Principal Luke Spielman told families in a letter that some of the students started to faint, during the practice on Thursday.

The first thing I thought was carbon monoxide but the school and emergency services quickly quashed that.

Listen… my kids were in choir, band, orchestra you name it. Sometimes they were in non air conditioned areas that were miserable.
I don’t remember in all my years of being a mom a single child fainting.

Something about this sounds VERY fishy. What do you think this could be?
A mom posted on the FB news page that her daughter was one of the sick that fainted and they were trying to downplay it.
She also said it was NOT just 2 that fainted….

If it were a viral illness would it be possible for this all to happen in this short span?

Most likely has to due with ventilation. Low oxygen level is a possibility. ?

There is a lot of sickness going around in our area too, Strep A and also the Flu.
I know two kids that have been hospitalized with the flu. Not something you normally hear about.

You know when the weather changes way to fast for the body to adjust, kids do fall ill quickly. It's one of the reasons here in Japan does not have air condition in its public schools. Private schools have air, but not public.

When I was in grade school, a fellow classmate fainted during a choir concert. It was very warm and the kids stand close together on stage risers.

Unless a whole lot of other kids are showing symptoms of illness, I wouldn't suspect a virus. I'd be more inclined to wonder if it happened after lunch time and if so, maybe a food borne illness?

Also, was the whole school practicing for, say, a Christmas concert? Any Catholic can tell you how common it is for one-two choir boys to faint on Sunday due to locking their knees while standing for a long time in one position.

I hope they figure it out and all the kids are okay!

Over the next hour, the school district said additional PVMS students began to report they also felt ill.

I don’t think any schools in our state have masked for a long time.

It would be unlikely that an illness could cause such symptoms in so many people at once. It is more likely something environmental or maybe a shared party drug. I would be very surprised to hear this was some kind of physical ailment.

It sounds like a mass hysteria event. It's happened before, oftentimes in school events, usually affecting mostly teenage females.

I'm on board with this!

Almost has to be environmental as opposed to some sort of illness/ailment! Despite the fact that other students reported "feeling ill"...my guess is this is incident with the choir was isolated (they passed out not just felt ill)!

I wonder about chemical exposure...spraying outside the area or near vents leading to the choir area (wherever that was)! The quick onset and the severe reaction...I almost have to think chemical exposer of some sort!
