They are shape shifters and all continents and cultures tell stories of stepping on logs in disguise that turned into a serpent and swam away, or luring people to go sit on a log and once they do, they get stuck and it shape shifts back into the water horse (Kelpie, lochness Scotland) and drowns the person.
Asians tell stories of Nagas (serpents) that once you step or ride on them logs, the dragon will take your soul, drag you to the water, marry you off to their land.
Chinese says once a serpent reaches the evolution where they grow horns, then the horns can be used to hear. Since snakes can't hear. Explains these horns sticking out of water
