There's been an explosion at a gas pipeline near St Petersburg , footage shows the initial explosion and the resulting fire.

Videos from the centre of St Petersburg - close to the gas pipeline belonging to Gazprom Transgaz SPB - shows the visibility of the blast, as the fire keep burning.

In total more than 800,000 people receive heat from the Severnaya plant.

It was unclear who is behind this explosion.

My guess would be a revenge attack.

Could be an accident but in the light of most Ukraine being without power now, because Russians targeted that infrastructure, my guess is a revenge, too.

Actually if the Ukraine has the ability to pull it off a bunch of attacks on the natural gas pipelines and infrastructure would be extremely effective now that winter is here. Knock out the right ones and entire cities could go dark and cold in days. And be out for weeks. Buildings don't really bounce back after a couple weeks to months of subzero weather.

St Petersburg is roughly 17 hours driving time from Kiev. Some 1,250km or 790 miles in old money. Just to give some perspective on the logistics.
St Petersburg lies on the edge of the Baltic Sea and less than 200km or 125 miles in old money from Finland's border. The border to Estonia is about the same.
Ukrainian special forces travelled all that way to blow up a pipeline? Hmmmmm

First they would not have to be from Kiev so the distance is not important. Second, if Ukraine can place a car bomb in Russia, then they can also blow up a pipeline in Russia.

It makes the most sense and one could not even blame them for it.

Yeah, basically.

It could also be Russian saboteurs as well, or from any nearby country. Doesn't specifically have to be Ukrainian Special Forces.

Agents of special forces and intelligence services deploy world wide. Israeli agents travel "all that way" to sabotage, assassinate in Iran?

Things are going to escalate quickly, now; I think we'd better celebrate New Years early. Maybe even Christmas....

You know..Im surprised there hasn't been a lot more of this, a lot earlier..if this is a war related incident..Not like there's a fence around Russia, or even that much of a language barrier…Something I'm sure was a factor in the decision to engage in this cleansing attempt..but man it was went about backwards..horrible…kinda proves Ukraine was at the very least, minding its own business..Vlad could have sent teams just as easy, I mean, Ukraine, fairly early in its sovereignty couldn't have been that difficult for them to have been…lets say, restructured..

Bayraktar TB2 drone has up to 4000 km range, any change that Russian air defence would not see it ? Ukraine allready hit earlyer Shaykovka Air Base which is deep in Russia, and a military base with drone......somehow the drone was not detected until it was there.

base attack

That does make sense Jane while at the same time Russia has loads of what we know as Ukranian's living there just like the group we know as Russian's live in Ukraine. The Soviet Union was one state and people lived wherever they worked. Even Zelensky lived in Mongolia essentially yet not officially part of the SU back in the day. Everyone got mixed up. Plenrt of Ukrainian's all over Russia plenty of opportunity to have trained sleeper cells up over the past decade by Ukraine, Yanks, Brits, whomever

I agree with you, but it comes second to a 'blow out' on their pipeline.
If it was sabotage, not sure the Russian's would even tell us.

And just as high ranking UN and American officials are trying to dial this back and get people to the negotiation table... Again...
CONVENIENT...

This is most likely orchestrated by the UK and NATO to further escalate the conflict. Russia will now likely respond with another round of attacks on Ukranian energy infrastructure with missiles they supposedly don't have.

Rinse repeat...

Yes, blame the UK and NATO with zero evidence?

Figures.

Not sure those things are mutually exclusive in this case. Take the Ukranians who have been bombarded by their own government for the last 8 years for example. Wouldn't this whole conflict then be Ukraine getting what it gives?

I guess I'm just confused by what metrics do we stop/start applying basic inalienable rights to people? I thought all people deserved the same rights to live? Including Russians...

Are statistics not evidence?

Is Russia attacking it's own infrastructure again???

Not that big of a distance.
Peanuts in regards to the effectiveness of Putin having a taste of his own medicine.
He doesn't even get to use his own gas anymore... Boe hoe.
