I was here in a portion of those old days, and then I was gone for long while. Your thread title drew me here since I personally recall the creation of many epic threads by very dedicated members. I remember showing them off to non-computer-oriented people who would otherwise never hear these words... always to my joy at how people would proclaim "this should be published or in a magazine!" But that was in earlier days, when the electronic medium as still much under-appreciated.

You are correct. The tone and nature of members posts, and contributions, has changed. I suppose that is only a manifestation of two things; 1 - the changes in the environment in which we operate both inside and out of this forum, and 2 - the fact that we change as members, not just reactively, but in a generational way too.

I was late to your thread... (a matter of my only becoming active today after a long absence.) I see that the original context of the thread has morphed several ways... but I wanted to make sure to thank you for reminding me that ATS was once different, and it was a good thing it was.

If it hadn't been for then, now would be quite different.

Tomorrow will be different too; hopefully we can try to help it come along nicely.

Some of us Originals are still around such as Blaine91555 and poke our heads in every now and then to see how things are progressing. Well, he's a SuperMod so he is alot more active to be fair.

I agree, ATS used to be a place of high quality content, and still is.

I think the biggest thing that has interrupted our current culture is how hyper-politicized and polarized everything has become. I'm guilty of this as well on some occasions. However with that, there is much to learn from our current situation as well. Back in 2005-2006 (at least when I was most active), we were in the heat of the 'War on Terrorism', internet rules were still blurry, and technology hadn't progressed past anything more advanced than a Motorola flip phone on Nextel. Things were just 'different' and more 'wild wild west' in a way. Plus, during the 'WOT', we each had a common enemy and were much more united (Referring to America only as this is my only experience).

Also, we didnt have sites like Reddit or Quora or Twitter or Facebook. We had forums, many forums and this was just one of them. The discussions and topics that flourished here still do so today except in different form. That is what makes ATS so attractive over the Reddits, Quoras, and Twitters. It is a rare archive of the internet that is still intact, and bolstering with conspiracy theory's I would dare look for somewhere else that hasn't been censored or removed due to "Misinformation".

We do have a huge corner of the market share when it comes to a Conspiracy Form, if not 90% of the market share.

Just my two cents.

I miss those days too, when this site was more about discussion of the paranormal and other weird topics.

Ike was probably right about how society might have acted in the 1950's, but these days, it would not matter.

The Pentagon finally admitted it's interested in UFO's, but it barely made headlines when it did. This is no longer the 1950's.

I joined here somewhere between 15 and 20 years ago, and I too remember the old writings. The writings of both sage and fool were entertaining.

I was Taupin Desciple back then (intentionally misspelled) and I remember those days and nights as good times.

I have no idea how to get back into that old account, so I just made a new one.

Thank you Bones, i was a member here in the very early days, infact i remember it was just after 9/11 that i originally joined. I no longer remember my old details or email i used back then (probably something weired like most people my age had back then - mid to late teens). I could spend days reading and disecting posts and doing my own "research" back then, unfortunately life took over as like many and i started visiting less and less until maybe i would drop by once or twice a month then once or twice a year but i always just lurked mainly finding it more interesting to me just to read the posts.

The last time i truley lurked was before the influx of the right on here (those of us in the know know when this happend but im not going down a political hole), it saddens me to now come back and see half of the posts on here turn into a "I'm right you're wrong" view point, people used to actually have good debates and discusions and it wouldn't turn into a # throwing match and people would admit they could be wrong and that was that.

I rejoined today just to say thank you of reminding me of what a good site this used to be AND what it could be again alass i dont know if certain parts are to far gone now (there's a reason some sub reddits got banned - you know the ones i mean).

May Mintaka guide us and help us reach our potential, J

I absolutely agree with your take on this Blaine and I hope old and new members remember one thing, if nothing else, try to be kind and open-minded.

What was the occasion that marked the change? If you really don't want to go there, then please PM me.
I've tried to understand what happened to the place, but my best guess is that right-wing troll farms workers are inserted to dilute and drive off the serious inquiries.

To the contrary, I believe it would have united a fractured world and give pause to consider our shared humanity.

With all due respect, I don’t agree with that at all.

Reagan said something similar. What if an alien force came to attack us? That would unite humanity.

Oh really? For how long?

Humanity was united against Hitler, and right after he was defeated, went right back to squabbling and fighting and, in fact, produced atomic and hydrogen bombs in the thousands.

And when the creator of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, had a change of heart and tried to convince the US to unite with Russia and control the Hydrogen bomb, 1000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bomb, he was blackballed from government service through the revoking of his security clearance.

I do, though, agree totally with your analysis that an alien disclosure wouldn’t destroy religion.

I wish it was like the old days. Discussion of UFO's, the paranormal, and sasquatch is really interesting and fun. Unfortunately all these annoying things have happened lately to derail that. And if you ignore them it just makes things worse. So what do you do?

Perhaps only for as long as it felt instinctively right.

We are pack animals and when in danger we huddle.

But it would give us a glimpse of what life could be like if we realized we had more in common than our petty differences.

On a fundamental level most people want the same things.

I don't think i could give exact dates because i don't think i had really visited much between 2017-2020. I came back at probably summer of 2020 time because i was trying to find some old 9/11 posts that i remebered where on here for some personal research and to help a very old aquaintence who told me he refuses to come back, when pushed for answers he blatently told me it was due to the politics. Now obviusoly I know there's a politics sub forum which i personaly used to stay clear of because well it's not what i've ever been here for.
Once i found what i was looking for i thought i'd have a poke around the old sub forums that i used to like and i could see the influx of the right trying to push there agendas whether or not these were troll farms or real people i couldn't say. But when i started seeing simillar trends start to pop up in places like Ancient Civilisations and other mysterious forums I did start to think to my self that the Qanon bots had started to make their way over after the sub reddits had been closed down.
Now like i said i'm not here for the politics or anything to do with politics as i'm not interested in it at all but seeing it beeing brought up was disheartening and seeing that the majority wouldn't even debate anything anymore was even more so especially when those who tried to debate were mocked and the name calling started i knew this place wasn't for me any more.
Yet sometimes I still have an urge to come back and yesterday it felt like a good time to pop by, seeing this post reminded me of them old days. I truly believe this place can be like it was pre 2017/2016 and IT IS getting there i have noticed, how long it will take well that's anyones guess.

Ya, agreed. Lot of stuff got hijacked, and the influx of the crazies has turned 'conspiracy theory' into a joke. That's no accident. I have at least 3 different scenarios that I no longer talk about on-line because they engage the machine. Still see the odd case come up here when somebody very openly backs off of an inquiry cuz things get weird.

The technology basically exists already to fake an alien invasion VERY convincingly...

The system could change the way 3D shapes are used. For example, instead of only looking at images of a suspected tumor, surgeons could explore a CT scan by touching a 3D projection of a tumor or other irregular tissue using haptic feedback.

“Touchable holograms, immersive virtual reality that you can feel and complex touchable controls in free space, are all possible ways of using this system,” says Ben Long, who led the research team. “In the future, people could feel holograms of objects that would not otherwise be touchable, such as feeling the differences between materials in a CT scan or understanding the shapes of artifacts in a museum.”

magazine.scienceconnected.org...

A new method called tensor holography could enable the creation of holograms for virtual reality, 3D printing, medical imaging, and more — and it can run on a smartphone.

news.mit.edu...

This is an interesting theory. I think it's pretty plausible that a fake alien invasion that was later outed as a hoax would definitely discredit any actual alien contact we may have. I also agree with the commenter who opined that perhaps War of the Worlds was kind of an experiment in this mass.....I can't think of another word than hysteria but it's not the right word.
