Alberta’s Justice Minister announces plans to resist Ottawa’s firearms buyback program
Alberta’s Justice Minister has directed the RCMP not to enforce Ottawa’s firearms buyback program and has plans to join a series of lawsuits that challenge the constitutionality of banning certain guns.
“Alberta will not assist the federal government in this or any federal effort to strip lawfully obtained personal property from a resident,” Mr. Shandro told reporters. “This is not about keeping our community safe. It’s pure politics from the perspective of the federal government.”
Only time will tell if that's the case.
Overview
Alberta administers the federal Canadian Firearms Program to:
oversee firearms licences and registration
maintain provincial firearms safety training standards
assist and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to help enhance public safety
inform Albertans about firearms safety
advocate for law-abiding firearms owners
Officials said the provincial officer will replace a federally designated chief and will play a large role in the administration of the federal firearms policy to better reflect Albertans’ wants and needs.
Justice Minister Tyler Shandro said the expansion will include a funding increase of $700,000 for the current year, growing to more than $7 million next year and $5.2 million the year after.
The money will go towards hiring 40 new positions for the chief firearms office, which will allow the office to process licence applications, transfers and other administrative tasks in-province.

And it looks like they are following through with more funding now that it’s up and running.
