Saildrone shows us what it’s like inside Hurricane Fiona

Have always been a Hurricane nerd, since I traveled for work in the Southeastern US and had plenty of time to see places before and after a hurricane hit, the South Carolina coast after Hugo was leveled. So when something related hits the news it catches my attention. this no doubt will help on tracking and hopefully find a way to lessen the severity even though, sometimes the country needs the rains it does bring.

Fifty-foot waves. Winds over 100 mph.

A NOAA Saildrone took video from inside the center of Hurricane Fiona this week, giving us a view of the storm at ocean level. The vehicle, which is about 362.5 miles southwest of Bermuda, was maneuvered in Fiona’s path to collect data.

Normally we see storms through NOAA’s hurricane hunter aircraft video, but those are aerials. NOAA’s fleet of seven Saildrones provides a new view of storms.

The Saildrone is equipped with specially designed hurricane wings, enabling it to operate in extreme wind conditions while collecting real-time observations to improve modeling in hurricane track and intensity forecasts.

NOAA said the Saildrones are gathering data to help understand the “physical processes of hurricanes” including how they develop and intensify. This better understanding is meant to improve storm forecasting and better prepare communities in the way of a storm.

Hurricane Fiona is the first Category 4 hurricane of the Atlantic Storm season. Four Saildrones actually tracked Fiona as it grew from a tropical storm to a major hurricane.

Fiona is currently predicted to affect Bermuda on Thursday and Nova Scotia on Friday.

Sometimes Ill just watch this ocean cam for hours and definitely if a hurricane is in the area...

That ocean cam sounds awesome right now.

I believe I hear the banshee’s scream and some other soft voice is beckoning me home.

👍💪

I'm in Nova Scotia and about to experience this up close and personal. Fiona looks mean and and mad I have a feeling she's going to leave one big memorable mess in her wake.

Ya, I'm in the direct path too. Hope you got everything ready AD and it doesn't turn out as bad as it looks it could be.

Here's hoping that weird jog to the west doesn't occur, as well as let's also hope it weakens significantly.

for anybody in the path here's an excellent resource to follow,

Here's hoping for a turn eastward and a significant weakening quickly. Keep us updated keep hearing category 4's this far north are extremely rare.

What's the scuttlebutt in Nova Scotia?

I've always wondered are Canadians as dismissive as Floridians seem to be about Hurricanes

AD and Gaotu, I wish you both the best of luck through this; Godspeed. Hopefully your hatches are battened, and your flood insurance is up to date!

To OP, very cool footage! Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to set up a 360 webcam on a pole and stake it down in the path of a tornado!

Putnum, I think it is those Cajuns who have proven to be dismissive for some reason. Floridians are a lot of Yankees who get the hell out of there.

I can assure you nobody here is being dismissive. This is the strongest hurricane to hit Canada. Ever. Most here are expecting the worst and praying for the best.

Some times. We don't get hurricanes per se, we get post tropical storms. They often head this way but get pushed out father into the Atlantic often as they make their way here. We also get a fair bit of nor'easter in the fall and winter so we are used to big storms. It's the storm surge and high winds that do the most damage up here. We do occasionally get storms like this but these aren't the norm. We've had 3 major ones in the last 20 years or so. Juan, Dorian and now Fiona.

So ya, most of the time we take these big ones seriously. They have smashed us in the past.

And the officials are saying that it could be minimum 3 days without power due to most of the trees still being in full leaf and will be much heavier and do more damage to our power lines.

ETA: I wanted to mention as well, it's forecast to hit at high tide, so the surge and winds are going to bee even more potentially devastating.

I was spared the worst of it although my yard needs some cleaning. Many around the Maritimes have been smashed by the storm. 80K or so without power on PEI, which is about half the pop of the island. Many in NS without as well. Some of the vids I have seen of the storm surge have been pretty gnarly. Huge waves crashing against the banks in my hometown.

I hope AD is ok and can check in when she gets a chance. Her part of the Maritimes got hit really hard.

Good to hear that, hope all is well elsewhere too. Following as much as I can on CTV website here in the states but it's limited news so far.

Weird I can watch Japanese news sites no problem during weather emergencies, but Canada seems tightly controlled

There's several 1000 around me without power but mine has stayed on for now. I just came back from a drive to town, about 20 mins away. There's at least 2 major lines down near me with fire crews on site to fight the fire and the power company trucks there as well ready to get juice flowing again.
