Does our latitude affect our attitudes...

Stumbled across this elsewhere and thought it was interesting as a bit of a geography and history nut.

Beijing, New York, Chicago, Seoul, Tokyo, and Toronto all fall with the same latitudes which I generally knew. As well as I knew obviously these places had the advantage of being suitable not only geographically but because of rivers, bays, and hubs for travel and commerce. That said looking at where some cities fall on latitudes in the US, makes me wonder are some of our traits similar because we live on the same latitude approximately to another place on the globe.

I mean come on New York lines up on the heel of Italy, forget about it. War-torn Beirut is Civil war burned down Atlanta, 2-sided religious Tehran struggles to modernize, some say there is an old Charlotte keeping New Charlotte from happening, and Rome is damn close to Chicago, Tripoli and Benghazi San Diego, and Tijuana

We got Tel Aviv in Texas both independent almost fanatically and perhaps the perfect analog in Ankara Turkey and Philadelphia Pa.

it certainly does, just for the fact that latitude affects the climate.
If you can harvest all year round, you won't have to learn to plan ahead ever.
I'm fairly sure that this very basic difference makes up for most of the behavioral diversity seen in different cultures around the globe.
Planing requires a more sophisticated thinking process than just living from the hand to the mouth, it is also the root of stress and disappointment.

Ive heard of those too, that's definitely down the rabbit hole a little bit further I'm gonna have to look at that more closely

Well, I certainly am well-learned on the philosophy that it is indeed always 5 o'clock somewhere, and who am I to argue with someone who knows the true appreciation of a good cheeseburger

Among other things, the latitude influenced where my wife wanted to live when we picked our current house. She also studied maps for things like elevation and where the rivers are because of tsunamis.

living north of new york, and knowing people down in TN- I'll say... yeah, climate does effect attitude.

If some punk comes around here messing up my garden, that's messing with my ability to eat in four months.
Messing with my equipment? Stealing my resources? I need this stuff, I don't have a snowblower just for the # of it.
That's grounds for execution, because it's endangering me and my family come winter. I'd rather be shot than watch my wife starve.

Down south? who cares? more food will be ready for harvest in january.

Scandinavia i can tell latitude forced people to co-operate with each other, it was all about survival in a cold climate then in small villages. They are more trusting and ask help only when they really need that and can´t do it on their own ( perhaps in centuries ago it was the same, not bothering your neighbour unless you really needed it as neighbour was also struggling to survive ). Also less talkative ( saving energy which i believe is due how our ancestors genes adapted living here. Even its cold up here people are more content in their lives than rest of the World ( World happiness reports ). In Scandinavia many of us have a bit Inuit in our genes. In same latitude is Alaska and Siberia ( Inuits originally ). I bet it is more genetical than other in this latitude.

This was pretty much where I was going with this, an attitude, the perception of your community, your neighbors. Of course, some of it is based on rural vs urban as well as cultural and historical differences.

Still, when you realize here in America it could easily be separated into lots of regions, but Ive traveled enough to know Atlanta, Birmingham, Columbia Charleston, Dallas, and Phoenix have a similar vibe and latitude. Within 2 degrees we got Boston, Chicago,Detroit, Cleveland, New York, and Trenton, and while we could blame thier similarities on urban blight or the fact that they are mostly in the Iron Belt but is there more to it? Is it just age and development? Had a buddy from New York comment on how new Atlanta looked and felt different compared to northern major cities.

That said Ive been up and down the east coast of the US from Key West all over Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina Virginia, DC, Philly, etc and even Florida Key West isn't Miami and Miami isn't Tampa, Orlando, or Jacksonville or Tallahassee or Pensacola and they all have similar weather but all of them do have their distinctions too. It is almost like the south starts south of Arlington Virginia and covers the panhandle of Florida but the rest of Florida has its own distinctions.
