I agree, it kind of has to be though (not that I advocate that either) but if you are at some point going to send men/women to their death then they need to be obidient soldiers and fully buy into the cult

I’ve been saying that for years.
The only difference between an accepted religion and a cult is perception.

By nature, people are tribal; some prefer to belong to small tribes, others larger ones. By definition, a cult is considered to be a belief system that is dangerous/potentially dangerous or harmful to its members and based on religion.

It seems the mainstream now uses the term to encompass any group that is brainwashed to whole-heartedly believe their right and the entire world is wrong. Like minded people are no longer 'tribal members' by those standards; they're cult members.

team mentality
most units think they're better than other units
most branches think they're better than other branches
almost everyone thinks they're better than civilians

not sure about 'cult' but definitely not a normal organization

Some militaries, yeah. It really depends; It seems to vary a lot country by country, depending on how they're set up. I won't belittle anyone's country, but I've definitely known some where the soldiers are little more than indoctrinated sheeple, and others where the ones I've met have been taught (or already had) skills in critical thinking and the like, or the ability to adapt to a changing situation.
