(The Center Square) – With extreme heat expected to hit California and the West through Labor Day Weekend, California grid operators are calling on residents to voluntarily conserve electricity by avoiding the use of large electronics and even stop charging electric vehicles.
The California Independent System Operator issued a statewide Flex Alert Wednesday, calling on residents to voluntarily conserve energy between 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to reduce stress on the electrical grid.
The announcement comes days after California air regulators announced that the state will phase out the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035, mandating that all new cars sold in the state by 2035 must be zero-emission vehicles or hybrids.
In a notice posted Wednesday, Cal ISO urged residents to set thermostats at 78 degrees, avoid the use of larger electronics, turn off unnecessary lights and avoid charging electric vehicles.

Makes wonder there can't be that many EV cars already, where is all that power gonna come from after the switch in 2035?
What happens when the number of electric vehicles triples and quadruples, doesn't that mean the power grid would be strained at lower and lower temps?

What happens is that people get stuck.
Those in charge need to admit this was the biggest cluster and not well thought out.
We are nowhere near ready to go full electric on anything.

Charge at night. Plenty of power then. Charging stations at grocery stores is just stupid.

Hmm... Maybe Internal Combustion Engines could Help . Rumor has it they can Generate Electricity very Cheaply .......
Inadequate Solar Energy Conversion
Since electric cars are the new green way to go, they’re powered by batteries, which can be charged in various ways—including via solar energy or the electric grid.
With that, a solar car is an electric automobile that collects all or a significant portion of its energy from the sun.
Also, solar panels typically feature photovoltaic cells that convert solar energy directly into electric energy.
Because some energy evaporates as heat during the conversion process, energy transformations are not entirely efficient.
As a result, due to energy loss, electric cars cannot recharge themselves.
Lack Of Alternators
One of the biggest reasons electric cars won’t charge themselves is the lack of alternators. That said, the alternator is what converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Also, most electric vehicles are mechanized by lithium-ion batteries, much smaller than the traditional batteries used in cars today.
Due to the absence of an alternator in electric cars, they only have a DC-to-DC converter using energy from the high-voltage battery that propels the vehicle to recharge the 12-volt battery.
Without one, your car won’t be able to recharge itself.
Faulty Wiring Or Bad Connections
When you plug in your car, there are two main components: the charging port and the battery. The battery charges while connected, but the correct network must be made.
If the cables aren’t connected properly or damaged, the charging port won’t work correctly, and your electric car will not be able to recharge on its own.
So, while three-pin plug sockets can charge an electric vehicle, they are not made to withstand the loads for a long time that EVs demand.
Therefore, if you have an electric vehicle with a faulty wire or connection, it will prevent your car from charging.

Exactly unless everybody has one of these gas-powered generators and doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose to begin with?

Where do you live where the sun is up at night? There aren't many people within the Arctic and Antarctica circles. Also how do you charge in the months without sun?
And it needs to be somewhere way the hell away from where I live.

The solution is nuclear power and they know it. The plants need to be under construction immediately and they need to get rid of the process that makes permitting take a decade or more. They have to turn a deaf ear to the Sierra Club and stop the incessant lawsuits that drove the cost of energy up to what it is now and played a key role in causing the shortages.
Nuclear power is clean and safe and modern standards would make new plants truly safe and produce dirt cheap energy.
Solar and wind are great in the limited areas it's viable, but it will never cut it.

This isn't about just this Labor Day weekend it's more about the future as more and more cars being charged stress the power grid. More cars means more stress on the grid at lower and lower temperatures
you are indeed correct because everybody goes home in California and in bed by 6pm

Good Lord! Does your electricity turn off at night? I can flip on a light switch at midnight and wonder of wonders! A light turns on! How can this be when it's DARK OUTSIDE!!!!! Of course, California is a bit different. Who knows? Maybe it's a bit different in that state.
