Ten years ago today, I joined ATS. I had done some lurking a few months before that, and then decided to take the plunge. I've been down some rabbit
holes since then, learned some things, and had a lot of laughs. I've been angry, incredulous, shocked, frustrated, happy, mind blown, etc. These ten
years have flown by.
Today is Friday here, and the end of a very tumultuous week for me. Tuesday night, I was the victim of a hit and run. A guy driving a pickup truck was
driving erratically, probably drunk, got in front of me and slammed on his brakes. I stopped. I saw his reverse lights go on and was about to put my
car in reverse to give him room when he rammed my front end hard. He then took off like a bat out of hell. I didn't even have time to put my car in
reverse to get away. I was so shocked, I was frozen for a moment. After putting the car in park and checking out the damage, a bunch of people, 15-20
in all, came up and one lady immediately called 911. Surprisingly enough, I was not hurt, but my car was a different story. The entire front end was
pretty smashed up, including the hood. The car still worked though and was driveable.
The people who witnessed the hit and run stuck around and talked to the police officer after I told my story. They verified that I didn't do anything
wrong, that the guy was driving like a maniac, and was shouting out the window before he hit me. I was pretty shaken up. I called my insurance company
and told them what happened. Within a few minutes, they told me about a collision place I could take it to so it could be repaired. I was able to limp
my car home, and the next morning dropped it off at the collision place. They gave a rental to use. Later that morning, the insurance adjuster called
with bad news. The car was a total loss, and they would not repair it. The insurance company would cut me a check for what they thought the car is
worth before the hit and run.
Mind you, this was a 19 year old Olds Alero that I had for 14 years. So the last few days, I've been looking at and test driving cars. I am now faced
with spending upwards of $17,000 on a used vehicle and am facing $320/month car payments. I'm retired with a husband in the nursing home, so as a
community spouse, any income over $2900/month goes to the nursing home as he is on medicaid. So getting a part time job wouldn't help pay for the
vehicle, as the extra would go to the nursing home. They don't take these things into account for community spouses.
Then last night, the police officer in charge of the case informed me that the camera was able to definitely get a bead on the truck, and what he did
to me. Apparently the guy who hit me is as the officer said "well known". That does not bode well. This guy wreaks havoc left and right, no license,
no insurance. He's had at least one DUI. The officer said they know who he is and are looking for him. The guy blew town after the hit and run. The
officer told me if they find the guy, they can only cite him for a traffic violation, like a speeding ticket. Hit and run is not a felony if the
victim is unhurt. They cannot arrest him or put him in jail, because their hands are tied by the city district attorney. This guy has thousands of
dollars in fines, and has been doing this outrageous behavior for some time.
I think this is total bull#. What is it going to take to get this guy off the streets? Him putting someone in the hospital or killing them? I don't
feel very safe, as he could be anywhere. Getting any money from him would be like getting blood from a stone. So I will be spending a lot of money I
don't really have because I was the victim of a hit and run that is considered nothing more than a traffic violation. The criminals have more rights
than the victim. The cops wouldn't tell me the guy's name. So I feel unsafe, violated, and I'm really pissed. Nothing I can do but let the police
do their job. I hope they get the guy. Karma is a bitch. He'll get his one of these days.
