The voice of the Ancients.

This sonification of the black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster was created using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

The popular misconception that there is no sound in space originates with the fact that most of space is essentially a vacuum, providing no medium for sound waves to propagate through. A galaxy cluster, on the other hand, has copious amounts of gas that envelop the hundreds or even thousands of galaxies within it, providing a medium for the sound waves to travel.

In this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. The sound waves were extracted in radial directions, that is, outwards from the center. The signals were then resynthesized into the range of human hearing by scaling them upward by 57 and 58 octaves above their true pitch. Another way to put this is that they are being heard 144 quadrillion and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency. (A quadrillion is 1,000,000,000,000,000.) The radar-like scan around the image allows you to hear waves emitted in different directions. In the visual image of these data, blue and purple both show X-ray data captured by Chandra. I saw this the other day. There are no words to adequately say how amazing space is. Thanks for posting it.

How could sound escape a black hole if light can’t?

The sound is created from pressure waves rippling out from the black hole interacting with clouds of gas in the galaxy cluster.

Its a fitting kind of sound for a black hole, sort of warpy.
But it creeps me out listening loud on headphones-it sounds like distant wailing lunatics.

To follow-up on Nickn3's idea : how do pressure-waves escape a black-hole ?

We were always told that nothing escapes a black-hole ?

Reminds me of this

"Kola Superdeep Borehole screams." No wonder locals call it the well to hell. Before the very idea of a superdeep hole starts haunting your dreams, keep this in mind—the hole is only nine inches in diameter (that's about 23 centimeters).

Oh my goodness I nearly spat my tea out on that one!

So of course I had to try it... It apparently opened up some portal and I've been chatting with... oh forget all that for now.

Can't recall exactly where I heard (or read) this, but supposedly Space smells like a burnt Steak and then you've got this wild sound to add to the ambience. The Science and technology to make those sounds audible to the human ear is mind-boggling.

Boy have things changed, way back when we had to listen to any sounds at all would be in Mono. So we shouldn't get confused with this 1958 RCA Victor Record "Sounds In Space" as it was in a whole different context. But every one was on a Space Frenzy during that era and this thing call Stereo was a monumental advancement in Sound.

You can hear what was a mind blowing event back in the late 50's here

I've watched see Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.

I tried it just now. I heard something about "Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, the piper's calling you to join him."
