US World War One wreck found by divers off Cornwall.

Wrecks are often found in the waters of The UK. The latest is the USS Jacob Jones, which was the first US ship to be lost during the First World War.

The dive team are in discussion with The US Embassy to see what should happen next.

The Tucker class destroyer (DD-61) was commissioned Feb. 10, 1916, and deployed to Europe on May 7, 1917, roughly a month after the U.S. entered WWI.

The ship was involved with several rescue operations that year, according to the Navy. After the British steamship Valetta was sunk by U-boat fire in July, the Jacob Jones picked up 44 survivors. That same month, the British steamer Dafila was sunk by a torpedo while being escorted by the Jacob Jones, which rescued 25 survivors. The Jacob Jones picked up another 305 survivors from torpedoed British cruiser Orama while conducting escort duty between Ireland and France.

As you say, the site should be designated as a war grave.
Some very brave and honourable men went down with her and they deserve our respect and recognition.

The one worry I have is that this war grave could become subject to looting and illegal treasure hunt's if it's location becomes public, there are too many that would happily strip such a site of any relics.

So hopefully they will keep the location a secret or else monitor the site to make certain no unauthorized dives take place there.

At least they can carry out a proper funerary ceremony over the site and give these men the honour they deserve for having lain down there lives for there country and ours.
