Hi,

I wake at 3am most nights, I'm not sure if this is learned behaviour or whatever. However, I recently went on holiday and changed timezones (UK to Europe), I thought I would wake at 4am but I woke at 3am. this doesn't make any sense other than the often theorised witching hour theories.

I'm a healthy sceptic with a belief in the paranormal, was just wondering if anyone else has experienced time zone changes where they still wake at 3am?

Liver detoxifies itself when you are having the deepest sleep between 12 and 3 am, if you have any issues like eating late or medical issues this process in liver might wake you up. Also if your deep sleep is messed up with time zone change it can be a reason.
When i flew to LA from Europe, i wasn´t experiencing any sleep disorders and my body adapted very well to time change, but when i flew back i was very tired for several days, basicly sleeping as much as i could tho sleep cycle was not normal one.

Before industrialisation it was usual for people to wake up around 3 and be up till 5 in the morning, then sleep again. Make of it what you will.

I believe waking at 3am is a natural action back in the day they had whats called 2 sleeps a 1st sleep and a second sleep .

If you go to bed around 9pm 3am is 5 or 6 hours of sleep .

pray man pray, many people believe that God wakes people at the witching hour to pray to counter beelzebub's imitation of the resurrection.

I went through period of waking at 3.00 am back in the mid 1980's. It was really got to me, as i couldn't function work wise without a full nights sleep.

I was even going out for a run at around 3.30am to try and tire me so i could come back and sleep. It never worked. Then after about 6 months of sleep disorder it suddenly stopped and i went back to my normal sleep pattern.

I put the episode down to stress caused by my job at the time.

This is right, but, some people don’t really “wake up”.

Ever since the weather got hot I can’t sleep for crap - and sleep very little in summer.

Flip side, I can hibernate with the best of them in winter.

There’s a lot that goes into sleep patterns and awakenings.

I do think there is something to the whole thing about paranormal though - I’ve had several of my own encounters and can manifest.

Could be a lot of things.

We have a paranoid schizophrenic neighbour whom used to bang every night at 4 AM, one bang very loud to wake everyone up then went silent, he now does it at 2 AM but only when he think's everyone of his other neighbours is asleep.

This actually formed a habit whereby we would wake up every night at 4 AM even when he was not making his one loud bang.

Please stop using the clock. Your body has it's own clock so, say you go to bed at 12 o clock and wake at 3 o clock you've had 3 hours sleep. Hence if you go to sleep at 1 o clock you will wake at 4 o clock:- 3 hour sleep. And this will happen anywhere in the world. As long as no outside influences would wake you.

It's called something like the Circadian Rhythm.

Two hunters decided one day to hike up the mountains to go hunting for bears, they made a camp, and made a fire right in front of the entrance to the tent.

They decided that its best that they take turns keeping the flames going and just to keep an eye out, there had been reports of a dangerous and wounded bear in the area.

As one of the hunters fell asleep, soon the other one followed since it had been a long hike.

Suddenly the hunters woke up, the fire had died, the wind was howling.

Only the dim light of the remaining embers revealed a giant shadow in front of them.

This old tale, a true story by the way, might help to explain why we wake up in the middle of the night.

A few years back I read a book by A. Roger Ekirch entitled At Day's Close: Night In Times Past.

As previously stated, the author made the point that, prior to electricity, most people slept in two shifts, waking roughly at 3:00 a.m. All kinds of things happened at night: Conversations with the neighbors. Reading. Sex. Prayer. Even sending the kids to the neighbor's to borrow a cup of sugar or something like that as a character building exercise.

It was an interesting book, maybe worth the read to you if your library has a copy.
