It's still legal over here , this is a case of an over zealous local police force with little else better to do that day , their commissioner is not impressed.

PCC Mrs Jones said: ‘I am aware of the video published on Twitter which shows the arrest of two men in Hampshire yesterday, one for malicious communications and one for obstruction of a police officer.

‘I have taken this issue up with the constabulary today and have been advised officers made the arrests following a complaint from a member of the public of an alleged hate crime

‘I am concerned about both the proportionality and necessity of the police’s response to this incident. When incidents on social media receive not one but two visits from police officers, but burglaries and non-domestic break-ins don’t always get a police response, something is wrong.

‘As police commissioner, I am committed to ensuring Hampshire Constabulary serves the public as the majority of people would expect. It appears on this occasion this has not happened.

‘This incident has highlighted a really topical issue which Hampshire Constabulary and other police forces need to learn from. In order to support this I will be writing to the College of Policing to make them aware of this incident and encourage greater clarification on the guidance in order to ensure that police forces can respond more appropriately in the future.’

Unfortunately, those just sound like weasel words from the commissioner. She doesn't seem to have a problem with the hate laws, just that--

-- burglaries and non-domestic break-ins don’t always get a police response...

And if you read the link, these two aren't the first or only ones so persecuted.

...a UK man was jailed for 20 weeks for the ‘crime’ of posting offensive George Floyd memes in private WhatsApp and Facebook group chats.

...a 50-year-old mother in Scotland was charged with a ‘transphobic hate crime’ after she retweeted an image of a suffragette ribbon.

...Humberside Police interrogated a man and told him to “check his thinking” after he posted a limerick that offended a transgender person.

...Essex police force faced ridicule for tweeting its support for gay pride but then in the same tweet warning respondents that it would be “monitoring” replies for “hate crime.”

This is not an isolated --

-- case of an over zealous local police force with little else better to do that day.

It's the law and standard practice.

When officers arrived they were prevented from entering the address to discuss a potential resolution to the matter.”

The guy has probably been a cockwomble with the Police, not done as asked, aka let them in to discuss the matter, and got arrested as opposed to for just posting the meme.

Outrageous the Police would even be involved all the same but if you bam them up it has have been known to get you arrested.

No spin, no bull# or bollocks.....this is just stupid.
Cases like this are incredibly rare.....but one case is one too many.

If any politician had the balls and/or honesty to stand up and publicly call things like this out and demand that our police concentrate on real crime they would be a shoe in.....

Sadly most countries have the one or two examples of this sort of madness.

We really need to put a stop to this insanity pretty damn quickly before its too late.

In the UK the British police arrested an army veteran for sharing Meme On Facebook of the LGBT flags arranged in the shape of a swastika.

According to the British police.
Someone has been caused anxiety based on your social media post.

In the UK you could get arrested for your thoughts or a meme but the police dont have the time to arrest actual criminals.

Imagine the British police arresting innocent anyone sharing the meme of pepe the frog.

People keep testing community guidelines and then acting surprised when the same agencies who invented those guidelines send their goons to test you back. Lawyer up and conquer, or find a new platform.

I dont see the PF pursuing the case to an actual court of law else any judge or sheriff in their right mind is going to through it out and demand to know why time was wasted bringing it before them, unless they are as woke as feck that is.

End of the day through, what a waste of time and resources on behalf of the Police, who obviously have nothing better to do with their time on the job.

Pursuing actual real criminals springs to mind but that may take time and effort never mind skills that the police obviously don't possess in this day of age.

They have lost the respect of the majority of the public down to their lackadaisy antics and refusal to do the job appropriately.

Dont help matters that they have also been known to rape and murder people, and a right good few of them now seem to be accumulating sexual assault and or misconduct charges by the bucket load.

as you rightly point out the west is in lockstep over these issues which highlights just how foolish various police forces are to let themselves be so drawn on political issues as to act as political activists, the bottom line remains that the only harm they are doing is to themselves, though it does flow into the style of policing they adopted through covid.

the deeper problem remains that they're increasingly looking like yeomanry for the upper middle classes and in turn risk losing wider consent, all in all very self inflicted.

Quite a few deeper problems to contend with where Police are concerned.

Personally, i think the job attracts the wrong sorts in this day of age down to the power trip and uniform complex that tends to be the colour of their day.

The first time i actually ever heard of the "Peterloo Massacre" which does not look to have been too pretty.

Who in their right mind all the same attempts to proposition a sexual assault victim or goes on to send them highly inappropriate naked selfies???!!!

If that's not gross misconduct and abuse of a position of power im not quite sure what is.

Our police forces have become infected with the woke virus.

They've received some harsh criticism over the years, much of it justified.
Instead of addressing the real problem issues like failure to investigate grooming cases etc and going about actually catching criminals they have concentrated on putting a more 'modern' and 'diverse' face to their policing.

Over the years I've had a bit of interaction with the police for various things - not all bad - and by and large if I'm being honest I think most of them genuinely want to do a good job.
Sure, they get their fair share of bad eggs and the culture within the force has lent itself to covering up for each other regardless, even to the point of victimising and incriminating innocent people etc.

Even when judging by the standards of the day they could be pretty bloody brutal.....but is it any wonder when governments and Prime Ministers used them as a private enforcement agency at times?

Something had to be done and no-one wants to see a return to those days.

And if rumours I hear are correct the influence of groups like The Freemasons and The Old Schoolboy network are still strong.
That absolutely has to change.

But they've gone way too far down the woke/diversity road, which sadly is just a reflection of how society in general is going.
We need to put a stop to it, urgently.

The Police need to concentrate on their core duties and objectives and return to basic policing values and principles.

My thinking being in such a profession it doesn't take too many bad apples to spoil the bunch.

Police need to concentrate on winning back the public trust imho.

And they will never do so with woke bull crap like this or for that matter the likes of the zero-tolerance approach they have to some crimes which amount to misdemeanors at best. Because that about revenue generation if truth be told down fixed penalty fines and the like.

Police don't even prevent most crimes all they do is attempt to pick up the pieces afterward, and poorly i may add where a lot of situations are concerned.

Take house breakings for instance where you are lucky if forensics will even bother to turn up until 48 to 72 hours after the act. By which time any sort of evidence that may lead to the apprehension of the people responsible can become contaminated or destroyed beyond being of any use.

Bringing back the local bobbies that you get to know and that people can form a level of respect and trust might be a start but chance would be a fine thing indeed.

great points well made

clearing the clutter from my comment I see it all as a wider regression for the police back to the days of them being the enforcement arm of the upper middle classes and dodgy handshake brigade who are the ones leading this not the rank & file who mostly want to do their jobs.

in that wider context its about maintaining the power of the grandees in this changing world, as a roman catholic it also reminds me of the factors leading to the reformation, through that prism I see Johnson as a Henry8, Blair as a Cardinal Wolsey, and Cummings as a Thomas Cromwell.

But we do appear in a highly compressed version of the period from the reformation to the age of reason, with Johnson gone that ends the first chapter of this story. no wonder Charles is sceptical of being another king Charles...

i can't see a path to change that's not wholesale change back to where the senior ranks came up through the ranks and knew the law even if was to play at the edges, and what this incident shows clearly that even when they know they are not acting within the law they'll continue on regardless.

Thats Police in spades mate, they will endeavor to cover there own arses whither or not they are right or wrong and they will lie and cheat at the drop of a hat to do so for one another.

The are the biggest gang around, and some of them as bent as a £3 note.

Hence the problem really and why a lot of the public simply don't trust them as far as they could through them.
