The original Join or Die flag was because people of the time mistakenly believed that if you cut a snake into pieces each piece could grow a new snake.

Worms can do that, so I am told. They are a bit snake like, more simple form. As for cutting the head off a brown snake, its dead. Still be careful with its fangs. Might flop around a bit when cutting it up, not long.

In Aboriginal lore, the rainbow serpent is one of the main ones that helped kick of life on Earth.

The 8 parts of the snake symbolize the 8 colonies (states). They are even signed in the form of the first letters (for example, N.Y. - the state of New York, and M. - Maryland).

Somebody help me out here, I'm stumped! I know what all of the colonies are represented on this snake except N.E. What is that? New Hampshire?

The "Lernaean Hydra" which was a monster killed by Heracles during his second task springs to mind aka "cut off one hydra head, two more would grow back in its place".

In the heat of battle, have not seen too much growing back too quick. As for how so many plants branch off in so many directions? Maybe there is something to the hydra?

On the long game it does have some roots.

Maybe the police force fits the hydra narrative these days. Shoot one cop and a few more with turn up quick. Shoot them and a lot more will be called in. Do them in and the military guys will get a call. The state does have a long history and reputation of dealing with insurrection. Has that hydra vibe to it with what it has become these days.

Apparently, the "Lernaean Hydra" task and legend is supposed to symbolize "victory over one's desire and the primary movements of appropriation."

I suppose it could a parable for a lot of things take martyrdom for instance.

actually that flag was not flown by the all the colonies, it was flown by the town of Taunton Massachusetts. many states/ colonies/ towns had their own design

the Gadsden flag was the first flag flown by U.S. Forces designed by Gadsden who adapted it from Continental Marines design on the drums that they used. Gadsden gave one to the commander-in-chief Commodore Hopkins of the Continental Navy to fly it on his ship.

then there is the question about if the Gadsden flag was even the first, Trumbull's Bunker Hill Flag ( see link below) is thought to have flown during that battle.

here is a site that gives a fairly decent list,

Flags of the American Revolution Era

I joined the U.S. Army at 17 years old, so my family would never have to take American history lessons from the Russians. 👍🙄

I'm unconcerned if the flag is indeed at the U.S. Congress. There are worse things happening there.

I hadn't seen you for a while and was worried that you may have been shipped off to the meatgrinder. I'm glad that you weren't.

Countries steal stuff like this all the time from the US

Just like they steal a lot of the tenants of our constitution and other bills

Wana know why?

Because regardless of what our gov is like now, our founding was the best in history, flat out

The best form of flattery is imitation

Ignoring how literal genocide preceded the foundations of today's society the way an excavator might remove a pile of corpses from the inconvenient grave impeding a new hotel/casino which profits the man whose grandfather initially slaughtered and buried those bodies. If you'll forgive the roughly assembled analogy, you may appreciate the resemblance to our bloody and violent history.

And that was the method in those days. Now, shift forward about two hundred years to look at what countries operate even more gruesomely, I could name many of them, I''ll bet you could too..

What I'm talking about is exalting the US to some kind of moral or professional standard our society most certainly doesn't deserve. Our hands are no less bloody for what we have accomplished.

Myths are like Chinese whispers without the written word, serpent/wyrm like creatures were pretty common back in the day.

First impressions would say our ancestors were daft but maybe it was a case of most people never had practical experience with anything much more than a worm.

Vermont should have conquered them like they did with the rest of Canada.

And suddenly, the strongest unifying symbols of America are attributed to this super corrupt sub-state, Ukraine, and even in the US Congress, and even with an obscene inscription that offends the entire people of the United States.
My opinion: otherwise than Shame, it can not be called.

Thank you.

And you think 99.9999999999999% of Americans care about this in some way. I love how foreigners think they know something about us...well you don't and Ukraine can use that symbol all they want as it is fitting for the situation.

As an American I approve the use of it...

I suppose oral history is prone to change down to hyperbole and the fact that people tend to remember things differently.

Even our written history could be taken out of context and misunderstood down to semantic progression.

I don't think our ancestors were daft, in some respects they were probably a lot smarter than we are today, in certain areas, down to them constantly having to be on the ball or pay a significant price.

We are spoiled in this day of age, with access to what amounts to a supercomputer carried around in our pockets and the near grand sum of total human knowledge available at our fingertips.
