Yes that's sounds good, also teach all the kids First Aid. Imagine if all kids knew basic first aid across the country. Even outside of school shootings etc there could be so many lives saved in the general public too.

Damn, I hate to rain on your parade again... but we're talking about kids as young as 5 or 6. I don't think they would have the ability to apply first aid in a shooting scenario... most would be busy messing themselves (for good cause).

How about we let school employees who want to and are legally able to, carry a handgun? Special, free training provided by the SRO and monthly meetings to train afterwards. Take those damn "Gun-Free Zone" "Criminal Target Practice Zone" signs down and burn them! That's how you stop a gunman from using his gun: shoot him with yours. No gunman has ever, to my knowledge, been stopped by someone throwing sharpened pencils at him.

Add in a little actual security at the entrance/exit, and you stop school shootings.

Bullet proof desks?

Not unless they issue a free one to every gang banger in Chicago. In my opinion a couple thugs smoking one another in a school parking lot doesn't constitute a "mass shooting".

You wanna solve the problem of school shootings? Fix our mental health problems...

Nah, it's a good topic! Thank you for starting it. We're getting a lot of good responses.

Heck, I'll even toss in a flag.

Please don't feel that way. The discussion may educate some of the ones that are capable of solving this peoblem.

The biggest question with all mass shootings is how do you stop the shooter when no one else has a gun? That guy in the mall proved what needs to be done when someone starts shooting randomly into a crowd. It doesn't take a lot of good people with guns, just a few spread around.

Gun free zones cause mass shootings.

Why dont we just educate all of our children on a military base
and that way they cant be attacked by lunatics with guns
those high electric fences , guard dogs, guy at the fence with a 50cal
armed guards on patrol

I grew up on military bases and we were all so traumatized with other crap we didn’t have the wherewithal to think of shooting up our classmates. Btw, we did have German shepherds sniff every single locker at random AND if you ever ever ever left a backpack unattended it got blown up in a field.
I also had a friend that had a very high ranking father, she was a kidnap risk so ever single even she had to have bodyguards.

Back to the thread. Bullet proof desks would probably help a few but I have a feeling these deranged kids would almost find more joy in going around and getting them from a different angle. Remember these kids go to those schools and know the β€œdrills”.
They know exactly how to get into the schools. They know all the weak points.

By Robert E. Lee's favorite miniskirt, you have a point there!

I have never thought about it, but yes, it seems most of these school shootings are by people who either are students or were students recently! Of course they know how to get around the school, of course they know how to avoid security... they were taught all that!

Thank you; you just added a dimension to the debate that I don't think many have considered. This is why I love ATS!

And then there are all the school massacres done by knives or machetes. Dublane here in the UK and one at a Chinese school a few years back.
If you want to kill schoolkids you have options, especially if you are one of them in the same school.
From setting fires to acid attacks to just strangling. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I can't believe that in my home city in Germany, there haven't been any school shootings ever. Nor any massacres.
Our gunlaws are strict and very few own one and family was still a thing.

However as american stuff always sneaks in and dumb kids can be easily amazed by dumb things I have no doubt we'll probably have a good old american school shooting soon enough. Sigh.

The Dunblane massacre was carried out with guns not knives or machetes.

And since then we have not had any mass school shootings here in the UK because of the ban we put in place.

No. The UK is the world leader in knife attacks.

Well had to be the world leader in something.

Daft jokes aside, its a sad state of affairs, still no mass school shootings through.

And it's a lot harder to kill people with a knife than the likes of an AR-15, or at least it takes a lot more conviction and time even.

This is also true, mental health is seriously under funded here in the UK, and everywhere else by the looks of things πŸ˜’

To make it easier, 131,000 schools decided by 40 incidents per year. That is 1 in 3275 likely hood of any single school having an incident. That is 0.0003% chance of a shooting incident at any single school in a year.

Isn't it 0.03%?

You are correct. I need to not try calculations involving percentages that late at night for me. I missed by two decimal places. It is still 1 in 3275 schools.

YES! Desk armor! Awesome!
Kids need body armor and helmets too.'
Kevlar backpacks.
Sandbags in the every hallway.
Shooter response training.
No windows in school just gun ports.
Drones, 360 Degree live video surveillance, electric fencing.
nuclear blastproof doors, AA batteries on the rooftop
Maybe a couple howitzers or is that too much?
I bet those measures would save at least one life so it's all worth it.
