5x champ Magnus Carlsen has professionally castled for his last time obviously realizing chess is boring and will most likely take up the game of go after said statements.

“The conclusion is very simple that I am not motivated to play another match. I simply feel that I don't have a lot to gain. I don't particularly like it, and although I'm sure a match would be interesting for historical reasons and all of that, I don't have any inclinations to play and I will simply not play the match."

The game of go a far superior game of intellect will likely attract Magnus as a logical next step.

Pretty sure I read somewhere in the article that he also said chess blows goats and scrapbooking is way more interesting.

I agree.

What’s your chess ELO?

I often trash chess and promote go.

AlphaGo needed the more complex game to learn.

Chess couldn’t cut it.

I’ve always looked at board games, like chess, as ways to bond socially, and pass the time. If you’re busy chess isn’t going to be so appealing, or have funner things to do. There are plenty of video games that are as challenging, stimulating, and strategic as chess, and imo are funner than chess.

When I was in high school we formed a chess club and were actually quite good. I was never the best, but held my own. But after school chess kinda was like “meh” to me. I saw more appeal in playing online games. But you take away the in person social interaction playing on a computer.

For social settings I do prefer a game of Monopoly or Texas Hold ‘Em to chess. I still will play chess from time to time. But it’s not as fun or interesting to me. So I get where he’s coming from.

There's an app that lets you play him on United flights. I'll let you know when they switch it to Go.

He's not sitting around checking a billion chess games right?

It's a selectable AI that ranges from 'LOL' to 'you're gonna get your ass handed to you'.

It would be funnier if he was doing it in person....he has an alarm on his phone and day or night he wakes up for it and moves...
There can't be more than a few hundred people playing that at once?

I'm probably the only one on the flight. I was playing trivia as well and it was me and only one other person. I think most people watch movies but I've seen most of them since I travel so much.

movies on flights are the best.
That and wine.
The time goes fast-ish thankfully.

I hate the pacific flight. That's torture.

When he loses does he toss the board and say he was getting ready to quit anyway?

I would play that.

Mystery solved.

Blame Magnus.

Chess is fun when you're BSing around, but when you play "seriously" it is indeed rather boring. Boils down to remembering movements and the rest is just ego. Want proof? Play someone who goes on and on about how they're really good at chess and play in an unorthodox manner. Make loose plays, and purposefully lose pieces, but still win. It will more than likely piss them off and they'll tell you some variation of "You're not playing the game right."

If someone is actually clever they'll see what you're doing and will be able to tell if you are actually any good or not, but most cases, in my experience, it's mostly people who remember what the pieces do, what the movements are, stick to a certain style, and lack adaptability.

ETA: Shogi is pretty fun, and I'll echo the the sentiments of Go. Go is pretty fun too, and I've noticed most Go players are nicer and less egotistical than chess players.

Shogi is a blast. I downloaded a shogi app and learned how to play after learning how to play go.

I also dig Mahjong.

I like any game where you get to bet and also slap pieces down.

The only Mahjong I know how to play is solitaire, and I love playing it to unwind. I'm aware of the competitive game, but never really looked into it. I don't think it's very popular where I'm located. Never heard of any clubs for it.
