Moscow politician gets 7 years for denouncing war

Alexei Gorinov's only crime was speaking his mind against Russia's war in Ukraine , freedom of speech and the right to express our opinions is a right we take for granted in the West but in the East held under a brutal Dictatorship that freedom no longer exists and speaking your mind will get you 7 years in prison.

Alexei Gorinov, 60, was arrested in April after he was filmed criticising the invasion in a city council meeting.

Under the post-invasion law, anyone who spreads "fake news" about the military faces up to 15 years in jail.

Russians are banned from using the word war to describe the invasion.

Judge Olesya Mendeleyeva ruled he had carried out his crime "based on political hatred" and had misled Russians, prompting them to "feel anxiety and fear" about the military campaign.

Appearing in court in northern Moscow, Gorinov held up a piece of paper with words he had written in pen: "Do you still need this war?" A security official held up his hands to try to obscure the message.

This kind of prison sentence reminds me of members of the disbanded German Communist Party as well as a few ordinary German citizens in World War II being arrested and jailed by the Gestapo for questioning Adolf Hitler's opinion that Slavic peoples were inferior to Aryans and that communism was invented by Jews.
