No, they haven't said and if it was it would be immediately obvious, by burns and such.

besides, it would be stupid as hell to ship mustard gas that way. Chlorine would be my guess approximately the same color and it has many more uses than mustard gas.

I was going to ask how you spill a gas but the link explains it as a leak.

It does sound like chlorine.

Is there a link to the video where the container was dropped? If chlorine was the gas, the container will be steel painted with aluminum paint. That is the only paint that chlorine will not destroy.

Okay, I'll play along with your conspiracy theory, care to explain the how and why?

Thanks. I missed it first time.

It looks white to me which means it is not chlorine.

Simple rigging failure. You would think they would rig the lift heavier because of the hazard if dopped.

Looks a nasty incident - not sure if it's a glitcb in the video but it appears the yellow cloud bursts out the front of the ship/causes it to disintegrate around the 12s mark (may also be rebounding off the water surface).

It's obviously yellow even in the video it's yellow but here is a picture from the BBC link

and a screen grab for the video link in the BBC article at no time was the cloud white

If anyone bothers to read the article posted,

It did not identify the chemical that was inside the container, although unconfirmed reports cited port officials as saying it was chlorine.

I think he related to the colour of the container, not a gas.

Yes, the gas is yellow.

The tanks are white. I put some equipment in a chlorine repackaging plant once. They pumped the chlorine from railcars to large tanks called tons and smaller tanks. Everything inside that could be and all the tanks were painted with aluminum paint. That is the only paint that will survive even the smallest exposure to chlorine.

Ether these white containers were not ment for chlorine or that gas is not chlorine.

I gotcha now, but as you mentioned in your first post, it was the rigging it wasn't attached properly or it failed. But I got to ask even if it were in a proper chlorine tank, it would have ruptured from a fall of that distance regardless.

Unless you are suggesting it was stored improperly and it would have leaked anyway? FWIW there are 7 other containers one would assume some of those would also have chlorine, wouldn't those be subject to failure too?, pretty sure they don't mix shipments, though in a middle east port anything is possible.

Whatever it is,
watching the video is interesting.

There's a smaller "explosion" of yellow coming from the dropped tank, followed immediately by a much larger one. I suppose it could have been a small puncture resulting in the tank rupturing.

The yellow cloud seems to disperse quickly- almost falling to the ground, leaving everything it touched stained yellow.

It reminds me of the crap in those cheap dry powder fire extinguishers.

Chlorine is heavier than air. That was one of the problems faced in WWI. They would fire off the Chlorine gas shells to drive the infantry out of the trenches and into the open. Then the artillery and machineguns would open up.
